It is not unusual that the 2009 La Lagune is a spectacular effort given the fact that this estate has been making terrific wines over the last decade or more. It boasts a dense purple color as well as a beautiful perfume of blueberries, mulberries, cassis, white chocolate and subtle toasty oak. Notes of Chinese black tea, cedarwood and forest floor also make an appearance in the singular aromatic and flavor profiles. This sumptuous, full-bodied La Lagune possesses low acidity, abundant but ripe, sweet tannin and a long, 45-second finish. Give this beauty 5-7 years of bottle age and drink it over the following three decades.

Served blind at the Southwold 2009 tasting. The La Lagune ‘09 has a lifted bouquet of violet, pomegranate, crushed stone and just a touch of orange peel. It is very well defined and exhibits impressive precision. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins. This is nicely balanced with good weight on the firm, masculine finish, touches of balsamic lingering on the aftertaste. This is an excellent La Lagune. Tasted January 2013.

(60% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot and 10% petit verdot): Deep, bright ruby-red. Sexy aromas of currant, underbrush, leather and toasty oak. Plush, seamless and sweet; full-bodied but not heavy. Pliant flavors of currant, plum and earth expand to fill the mouth. Finishes with broad, fine tannins and sneaky building length. Classic Old World claret from a ripe year: velvety, sweet and long.

Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2009 la Lagune opens with a an earthy, Band-Aid and menthol-laced nose with a core of crème de cassis, plum preserves and Provence herbs plus a waft of tree bark. Medium to full-bodied, firm and chewy, with a pleasant earth-laced palate, it has appealing layers and harmony, if it tails off just a little rustic.

(a blend of 60% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot and 15% petit verdot) Deep ruby. Enticing aromas of violet, red cherry and graphite. Creamy and soft on entry, then shows surprising backbone to the rather delicate red and black fruit flavors. Finishes long and smooth, with a tactile, almost sweet mouth feel that may not be for purists. This dense, chocolatey wine will need time to develop a little more nuance and grace. It offers excellent potential but is already quite flattering.

[60CS/25M/15PV] Dense blend of Merlot mulberry and mineral to smell; beautifully balanced, fresh, elegant middleweight wine, very fine tannins, fresh acidity, excellent proortions; sweetly ripe, effortless, silky fruit, both deliciously ripe and tastily vital at once; long across the palate, long and faintly warm to finish, with excellent fruit length and light mineral aromas. Very nicely crafted, elegant, relatively supple and refined La Lagune. 2018-30+
