Tasting Notes and Scores
Easily one of the most impressive Bordeaux 2001s that you can find. Full of liquorice, lashings of textured chocolate shavings, smoked earth and black truffle - powerful, fragrant and intense. Grilled almond smoke on the nose as it opens, a wine that keeps on delivering. Very few bottles of this left at the estate, and it is worth savouring. 100% new oak. Drinking Window 2021 - 2040

A real sleeper of the vintage, and somewhat underrated and under the radar after the greatness of 2000, the 2001 Angelus is on a faster evolutionary track than the 2000, but it is a plush, sexy, succulent style of Angelus with a dense plum/purple color, loads of chocolate, blueberry and blackberry fruit, telltale floral scents in the intense fragrance, and a lush, voluptuously textured and opulent mouthfeel. This wine seems to have entered its plateau of maturity, where it should stay for at least another 10-15 years. It is a major sleeper of the vintage. Drink 2015-2030.

Pure silky, sexy, lushness, with a complex nose and a voluptuous mouthfeel that leads to a rich, concentrated finish filled with fresh, ripe fruits, florals and elegant tannins. Young, but worth popping a cork if you have at least a few bottles in your cellar.

The 2001 Angélus is, without question, superior on the nose compared directly with its millennial counterpart. Displaying much more freshness and vitality, this springs from the glass with black cherries, asphalt, mint and juniper. The medium-bodied palate offers grainy tannins and melted red fruit mixed with tar, tobacco and spice. There is a little reserve toward the finish, as if itâs holding something back for the long term. This is a thoroughly enjoyable 2001, drinking beautifully now but set to continue its evolution for another decade or so. 13.5% alcohol.

Ruby-red. Very ripe, sweet aromas of redcurrant, roasted plum, truffle, smoke and game, lifted by a floral nuance. Lush, sweet and fat, with a seamless texture and lovely balance. Flavors of blackberry, raspberry, tobacco and chocolate. Finishes with rather suave, building tannins and excellent length.

A bit edgy and already quite evolved. Tastes initially like thick, sweet ink and then is lifted by some freshness on the finish. Not overdone.
