Tasting Notes and Scores

95 RP

This 7,500-case blend of 62% Merlot and 38% Cabernet Franc is one of the strongest wines of the vintage. A deep blue/purple hue is accompanied by classic aromas of smoky blueberries and blackberries as well as incense and floral notes in the background. A beautiful texture, opulence, flamboyance, and purity characterize this stunningly deep, full-bodied effort, another great success from proprietor Hubert de Bouard. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2022.
95 points – Robert Parker (Wine Advocate #171, June 2007)

One of the top wines of the vintage, the 2004 Angelus (a 7,500-case blend of 62% Merlot and 38% Cabernet Franc with a natural alcohol of 13.5%) is a classic, tannic, structured wine exhibiting a saturated dense purple color as well as a big, sweet nose of blackberries and blueberries intermixed with mocha, licorice, and new oak characteristics. Aged eight months sur-lies, this should be an extremely long-lived vintage for this cuvee. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025.

Perhaps the best deal for Chateau Angelus in the marketplace today. Plush, polished, sensuous and richly textured, the fruit is ripe, sweet and shows both its black and red sides. Full bodied, with depth and concentration, this is already showing well, and is only going to get better from here. Tasted May 2017

Full of dark fruits and sweet tobacco character. Full-bodied, with super fine, silky tannins and a long finish. Give it another three years.

Bordeaux Index's 2004 tasting. The Château Angelus 2004 has a "correct" foursquare but well-defined bouquet with lively blackberry, cedar and tobacco scents that suggest a healthy percentage of Cabernet Franc. The palate is medium-bodied with powdery tannins. It feels conservative and masculine although it retains admirable freshness and composure towards the succulent vanilla-tinged finish where the fruit really shines. This being Angelus it is lacquered with a modern sheen but whether that is your style or not, it is one of the most finest Saint Emilion wines of the vintage.

Deep ruby. Wild aromas of plum, redcurrant, game, underbrush and flowers; hints of liqueur-like superripeness. Supple and suave but also rich and large-scaled; seriously concentrated and deep for the vintage but less sweet than the 2005. This boasts lovely texture and broad, ripe tannins but I find more intensity and incipient complexity-not to mention purity and lift-in the young 2006.
