Tasting Notes and Scores
Tasted by Jane Anson(at Primeur week tastings in Bordeaux, 01 May 2021)
Clarity and depth to the blueberry and raspberry fruit, they have done an excellent job of working with a hot dry vintage to still deliver this estate's trademark charm. Located on soils with plenty of gravel that needed careful attention, and yet this delivers a juicy, fresh core with finely shaped tannins and a moreish salinity on the finish. An excellent success. A higher percentage of Cabernet Franc than in the past, as was true also for the 2019 vintage and will be going forward. La Pointe makes wines that are often not sufficiently recognised within the starry appellation of Pomerol, and yet are consistently enjoyable and full of enticing charm. 3.63pH. A yield of 38hl/ha.

The 2020 La Pointe has a finely tuned and detailed bouquet of black cherries, raspberry, wild strawberry and light truffle scents, unfolding beautifully with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine acidity and lovely poise, leading into a mineral-driven, sophisticated finish. This is one of the best vintages of La Pointe I have encountered at this stage. Just superb.

Lush, round, soft, silky and fresh, the wine is supple and sexy. There is a depth of flavor, opulent textures and a richness to the finish that holds your attention. This is a big step up in quality for La Pointe. The wine should age for 2 decades with ease. 92-94

Very aromatic with blackberries, dried flowers and wet earth. It’s medium-bodied with creamy, round tannins that are tight-grained. Fresh finish.

Deep purple-black in color, the 2020 La Pointe offers up notes of baked black and red plums, cherry preserves and fresh blackberries, plus wafts of crushed rocks, underbrush and black truffles. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock-full of ripe black fruit flavors, supported by ripe, rounded tannins and a lively backbone, finishing long and earthy.

Impressive blue and black fruits as well as spice, flowers, and tobacco all emerge from this beautiful Pomerol. It has medium to full-bodied richness, solid mid-palate depth, and a wonderful sense of elegance paired with power. Give bottles 3-5 years of bottle age and enjoy over the following 15. Tasted twice.

The 2020 La Pointe is quite pretty and soft. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, cedar, mint and pipe tobacco all grace this Pomerol, which impresses with grace more than power. Silky tannins add to its immediacy. Not a big wine, but it sure is a charmer.

Full bottle 1,256 g. Cask sample taken 6 April. 76% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc. 35-year-old vines.
Darkest cherry red with purple rim. More red-fruited than most of the Pomerols just tasted, perhaps the Cab Franc influence, though with only a hint of its usual leafiness. Smooth, rounded, chocolate-textured tannins, and noticeable acidity. Not fully meshed though the fruit is ripe and refreshing, which is not always easy to balance. (JH)
