Ths 100% Merlot cuvee from Christian Moueix is an atypically masculine, full-bodied, muscular wine for Moueix. This opaque blue/purple wine displays notes of black cherries, truffles, damp earth and licorice. Full-bodied, very deep and powerful, it will need of 6-8 years of cellaring but should keep for 25-30 years. It has the potential to be the best Providence to date.

Deep inky purple. Overripe aromas of cassis, blueberry syrup and coffee liqueur; smells more like a New World wine than a Bordeaux Then fresher and smoother on entry than the nose suggests, offering a velvety mouth feel and rich but rather chunky flavors of inky blackberry jam and vanilla. Finishes reasonably lively but with rather brutal tannins and a trace of heat. This massive Providence will probably impress many tasters but I wanted a bit more complexity. It may eventually come together in bottle but will no doubt require extended cellaring.

Served blind at the Southwold 2009 tasting. Hmm…this is a slightly disappointing performance from La Providence in the context of a great showing just after bottling. Perhaps this has entered a broody patch? It has a suppressed, black-truffle tinged nose infused with dark plum and herbaceous notes. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. Good acidity maintains ample freshness, but I found it difficult discerning complexity towards the finish. Tasted January 2013.

Sweet and freshly ripe to smell; plush and fresh middleweight balance with a fine dry tannin frame; juicily ripe fruit, with a marked spiciness and distinct warmth – long and complex and vividly spicy flavour; a distinctive combination of ripeness and freshness; quite powerful, but discreet at the same time; a fine fragrant finish. Delightful fruit, but quite a firm frame, will need time. 2019-30+

Last vintage was 2012. Tasted blind. Blackish shaded crimson. Gentle, pleasing, sweet but pretty ripe-to-overripe nose. Some heat and sweetness on the end. Very hot finish. (JR)
