Tasting Notes and Scores
Another solid wine with a wonderful core of fruit and polished tannins for the vintage. Full and intense with a balance and harmony. Long silky finish. Excellent texture to the tannins.
James Suckling
This has serious density for the vintage, with layers of raspberry and plum pâte de fruit, lined with singed spice and framed by well-integrated apple wood and black tea notes. Very, very solid. Tasted non-blind. —J.M.
Wine Spectator
The Providence 2012 has a precocious bouquet of lifted black fruit, kirsch, incense and a little dark chocolate. It is quite a mercurial bouquet, one that becomes more floral with aeration, hints of brine and salted liquorice. The palate is medium-bodied with light but tensile tannins. This is not a Providence of power and concentration, but it is light on its feet with an attractive salty tang on the finish. Classy, but a Pomerol not seeking attention. Tasted April 2013.
Neal Martin
Quite dense and ‘fat’, and lightly oaky to smell; beautifully balanced, fresh, finely tannic, fleshy wine; long, deliciously ripe, generous middleweight Pomerol, with a nice complexity, and fine sweet fruited and fragrant length. Like many of the Moueix wines this year, not a big wine, but with class as well as charm. 2018-28 [M.Schuster, Bordeaux Mar/Apr 2013]
Michael Schuster
Tight and closed on the nose, but showing some dark plum fruit and spice. Palate is smooth with fine grained tannins and a good core of dense fruit – cherry, raspberry and plum.
Bordeaux Index
A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2012 Providence exhibits an earthy, new saddle leather, spicy, masculine style that is less expressive than most Pomerols. There is plenty of density, power and richness, but the wine seems monolithic and somewhat unformed at present. I suspect it will come around given how recent vintages have performed, but for now, it is closed and inaccessible.
Wine Advocate
Deep dark cherry colour. Less immediately aromatic than some. Savoury and juicy and delicious. Refined and velvety and long. Much more voluptuous than most Moueix wines so far tasted. Drink 2017-2025 (JH)
