Tasting Notes and Scores

92 RP

A beautiful wine that should drink superbly for 15 years, this sensational 2007 was made from a tiny 26 hectoliters per hectare, and is a blend of 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc that achieved nearly 13.8% natural alcohol. The wonder duo of Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt hit paydirt with this beauty, which may turn out to be a better balanced wine than their 2009. This opulent, sexy wine exhibits a dense ruby/plum/purple color, a full-bodied mouthfeel, sweet tannins, and lots of forest floor, black currant, ripe cherry, and mountain flora characteristics. Filled with power, substance, and elegance, it should be consumed over the next 15 years.

Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Larcis-Ducasse has an unexpectedly classic bouquet, much less opulent than other vintages from the estate yet nicely focused, with cedar and pencil box aromas infusing the dark berry fruit. The palate is sweet on the entry with soft tannin and good acidity, yet the second half seems a little flat, as if all its energy was expended on the aromatics. Bottles of this 2007 have been variable, but this would suggest that its best days are probably behind rather than in front of it. Tasted February 2017.
