Chateau Latour Premier Cru Classe, Pauillac

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2001
Region: Bordeaux, Pauillac

One of the original 1st Growths in 1855, Latour's reputation for making consistently outstanding wine continues to this day. The consistency of its wines can, to an extent, be attributed to the fact that, since 1670, the estate has only ever had 3 owners. Originally acquired by the Segur family, Latour remained in the hands of their heirs until 1963 when the estate came under British ownership with acclaimed wine writers Hugh Johnson and Harry Waugh serving as advisors. Since 1993, the estate has been under the ownership of Francois Pinault, a lifelong fan of the wines of Latour who, since taking charge, has overseen a string of incredible vintages. Since Pinault took the helm, Latour has been characterised by extraordinary levels of concentration, richness, and structure. Most significantly, following the 2011 vintage Latour opted out of the traditional En Primeur system with the intention of cellaring their wines themselves and only releasing each vintage as and when they believe it is ready. Hence the reason you will find fewer recent vintages of Latour offered than the other leading Bordeaux properties.

The 2001 Latour is magnificent. A huge, structured wine, the 2001 Latour boasts notable depth to match its vertical, towering structure and pure power. At nearly fifteen years of age, the 2001 remains deep, virile and imposing. With air, the 2001 is a approachable now, but ideally it needs at least a few more years in bottle. This is a superb showing by any measure. Frédéric Engerer adds that 2001 was the last vintage that was lightly filtered prior to bottling. July 2016

Classic Latour, with a savoury, meaty note to the ripe plummy fruit and a hint of leather at the end. Although August was hot, there was rain at harvest and the team didn't begin to pick until October in an effort to wait it out. The final blend is 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. The grand vin is made with just over half of the grapes from the estate. The result has bright, fresh fruit, lots of tannin and impressive reserves of extract. Surprisingly long. Drinking Window 2022 - 2052

Tasted blind at the chateau, the 2001 continues to be an exceptional wine, one of the finest in the vintage. It has a wonderful, graphite-tinged nose that unfurls beautifully with blackberry and touch of dried orange peel with more noticeable cigar box aromas than I have noticed before. The palate displays superb definition with fine but rigid tannins and crisp acidity. It is not a powerful Latour, but one that is very refined and controlled. In another ten years, it will be ranked against the 2000 and who knows, it may even match it. Outstanding. Tasted June 2011.

A wine that’s firing on all cylinders is the 2001 Latour and this beauty over-delivers in the vintage! Based on 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, it offers incredible aromatics of crème de cassis, exotic spices, lead pencil shavings, forest floor and truffles. Deep, medium to full-bodied, and incredibly elegant, with polished tannin, it’s utterly irresistible today, yet given its balance and length, I suspect it has another 15-20 years of prime drinking. Extremely attractive aromas of blackberries and currants with just a hint of mineral and oak. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, long finish. As it was from barrel; powerful and fast. Serious stuff. Best after 2010. — JS

A brilliant offering, which should be drinkable much earlier than the blockbuster 2000, the 2001 Latour boasts an inky/ruby/purple color to the rim as well as a glorious bouquet of black currants, crushed stones, vanilla, and hints of truffles and oak. A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance primarily Merlot with a touch of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it reveals a sweetness on the palate that is atypical for such a young Latour. The beautiful integration of tannin, acidity, and wood is stunning. The wine flows across the palate with fabulous texture, purity, and presence. This luscious, full-bodied Latour was surprisingly open-knit on the three occasions I tasted it from bottle. However, do not mistake its aging ability as this 2001, despite its precociousness, will last 20-25 years. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025.

A lot of charm in every sip is the right motto for this wine. It's elegant, fresh, supple and round. The fruit is vibrant and refined, with a sweet, soft, pure, dark red berry core. I liked this a lot and expect to enjoy it even more with additional bottle age.

Deep red-ruby. Enticing aromas of roasted plum, currant, graphite and smoky oak. Precise, spicy and juicy; more herbal than the 2002 or 2003 but also very intensely flavored and not at all hard. This very long, pure Latour seems to be shutting down today. May 2004
