Tasting Notes and Scores

97 DR

A delicious wine that stands out from many in the vintage. A ton of personality, with a sappy, raspberry, autumnal berry fruit as it opens and travels through the palate, with rose petals on the edge that give a beautiful uplift along with the classic trace of mint. Its tannins are a little more angular than you find in the 2010 and 2009, but it is starting to lengthen and open, although this was a vintage that was not immediately impressive in the way that the previous two had been. A stately Latour, one that needs another few years to really show its place. The last Latour to be sold en primeur in the old system. 34% of overall production. Harvest September 12 to 26. This has a gorgeous core of steeped plum, boysenberry and black currant coulis flavors, backed by a prominent graphite note that drives through the lengthy finish, where extra hints of anise and sweet tobacco flitter in the background. Regal. Best from 2018 through 2035. 5,835 cases made. – James Molesworth (WineSpectator.com, March 2014)

The level officially goes up here. The 2011 Latour is undeniably the best wine we have tasted on the left bank and completely echoes the 'iron fist in the velvet glove' reference which is so commonly applied to Latour. Quite simply this had everything the vintage could offer: ripe fruit, a glorious expression of terroir, structure, freshness, a stunningly long and multi-layered finish with laser-like precision and focus. If you love claret, but you like it traditional (that is to say fresh, elegant and medium bodied) then this is the wine for you. A genuine triumph. Bravo.

The nose is complex, featuring smoke, meat and hints of wood, with currants, olives and berries underneath. Full body with super-velvety tannins. The strong acidity gives the wine an edginess. Love the spicy, subtly fruity finish. Steely. Try in 2020.

The 2011 Latour is well-defined on the nose with blackberry, bilberry, cedar, hoisin and a touch of mint. There is impressive intensity here, regal and convincing. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins. There is a solid backbone to this wine, plenty of freshness, quite powerful towards the finish with superb persistence. Wonderful. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.

[85CS/15M] Dense, freshly ripe fruit and minerals; perfectly balanced concentrated wine with a well integrated fresh acidity and beautifully textured, super fine tannins; svelte middleweight Latour; long, ripe, juicy and open in fruit, not particularly dense but with a lovely mineral infused quality, great length of flavour, and splendid perfume; a gently mouthfilling, throatcoating wine of great poise and presence, rather than great power. Top left bank wine, and one of the wines of the vintage. 2025-45+ [M.Schuster, Bordeaux Mar/Apr 2012]

Blackberry, truffle, tobacco, espresso and cedar wood aromas are easy to find. In the mouth, the wine offers more depth than expected, with multiple layers of sweet black cherries, blackberry and a hint of powdery tannins in the fresh, long, expressive finish. Tasted May 2014

93-95 RP

A blend of 84.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 0.5% Petit Verdot, the 2011 Latour represents only 34% of the crop. It hit 13.1% natural alcohol. One of the vintage-s most compelling wines, it possesses a dense ruby/purple color as well as a sweet, open-knit personality with ripe tannin, superb intensity, good purity and harmony, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and lots of crushed rock, floral and black as well as blue fruit notes in addition to hints of ink and forest floor. This beautifully rich, savory Latour will be surprisingly drinkable in 4-5 years, and should age easily for two decades or more. By the way, Latour harvested relatively late for the Medoc, beginning the harvest on September 12 and finishing on September 26. 93-95 points – Robert Parker (Wine Advocate #200, April 2012)

Intensely Cabernet on the nose. Cool and aloof. Very round tannins and extremely dry and mineral on the end. The opposite of flashy. But in the end very complete, satisfying and true to Latour. So appetising and digestible it could almost be drunk now. Not a massive or showy wine in any way but very long and moderate (rather than modest). Certainly dry but not drying. Tannins well modulated. JR
