Tasted at the Latour-à-Pomerol vertical in London. The 2000 Latour-à-Pomerol is a classic in the making and far exceeded expectations. Apparently Mme Lacoste inspected the vineyard with Jean-Pierre Moueix during the harvest at the ripe old age of 94! The nose is more powerful than the 2005, unrestrained, almost feral but totally captivating. Here there are opulent blackberries, blueberry and even a faint touch of eau-de-vie. The palate is dense in the mouth and yet wonderfully balanced, rounded and sensual with layers of tarry black fruit fanning out on the prolonged finish. Do not ignore this Pomerol among the pantheon of great millennial Right Banks. The quiet horse of the vintage? Tasted December 2015.

Deep ruby-red. Knockout nose combines crystallized cherry and raspberry, smoked meat, iron, mocha and vanillin oak. Lush, large-scaled and deep, with an almost candied sweetness to its red berry flavors. Complicated by rather wild notes of meat, truffle and leather. A mouthfilling wine with substantial but thoroughly ripe tannins. Has the guts to age but should be approachable on the early side.

An outstanding, medium to full-bodied effort, the 2000 Latour a Pomerol exhibits a plum/purple color, admirable texture, medium to full body, and notes of caramels, truffles, sweet earth, and cola interwoven with black cherry liqueur and plums. Pure, deep, and classic, with moderately high tannin in the finish, patience is essential. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020.
