Tasting Notes and Scores

95+ RP

The 2005 Le Gay is a massive, masculine Pomerol, very much in the style of Gazin, but showing much more minerality, abundant blue and black fruits, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and loads of tannin in a youthful, backward style, even at age 10. Give this wine at least another 5-10 years of cellaring and drink it over the following quarter-century.

ust starting to become civilized, the wine is powerful, full-bodied, concentrated and loaded with dark, black cherries, ripe, juicy plums, dark cocoa, smoke, licorice, flowers, espresso and wet earth. After 16 years, the wine is starting to deliver the goods in its unique, robust style. That being said, another 3-5 years in the cellar and this promises to be even better. Tasted June 2021

The Le Gay 2005 offers a luscious, ripe red-berry nose: raspberry, wild strawberry, citrus lemon and a faint hint of bacon fat. The palate is medium-bodied with lovely balance, ripe, sensuous black fruits, a little pain grille, white pepper and a hint of sous-bois. It exhibits great focus and natural sensuality; unpretentious but poised on the finish. This is my style of Pomerol! Excellent. Tasted September 2009.

Dark red-ruby. Plum, mocha, minerals and coffee on the nose. Supple, lush and sweet, with captivating flavors of raspberry, toffee, coffee, mocha and iron. Wonderfully pliant and appealing Pomerol, finishing with sweet, tongue-dusting tannins and excellent length. (A second bottle of roughly equal quality showed a more serious tannic spine and appeared to be in the process of shutting down.)
