2017 Chateau Le Gay, Pomerol

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2017
Region: Bordeaux, Pomerol
% Alcohol: 14.99

The brilliant Chateau Le Gay was the most significant project of the late, great ‘Lady of Pomerol’ Catherine Pere-Verge. Catherine was a fiercely competitive businesswoman and her wine business, which became her all-consuming passion, was no different. To quote Neal Martin “she is unequivocally dedicated to her properties and patently has an unrequited desire to produce great Pomerol wine.” Chateau Le Gay was previously owned by the Robin sisters (who also owned Lafleur) before the eldest sister passed in 2001 with no direct heir; it was then purchased in a move that sent shock waves through Bordeaux by Catherine Pere-Verge, the daughter of a French industrialist, who had already begun her winemaking journey with Chateau Montviel. Catherine’s famously high standards and drive to create the best possible wines helped to shape the modern Le Gay, which has been run by her son Henri Parent since her death in 2013. With huge vineyard renovation and replanting, parcel-by-parcel vinification and the genius palate of Michel Rolland consulting on the blend, Le Gay has never been in better shape.

Tasting Notes and Scores

Juicy, soft and velvety on the palate with plenty of brambleberry character. Full body. Round, creamy tannins and flavorful finish.

Showing beautifully in my tastings, the 2017 Chateau Le Gay makes the most of this solid vintage. Almost all Merlot from a great terroir on the plateau of Pomerol, it reveals a purple/ruby hue as well as medium to full-bodied notes of black cherry and cassis fruits, toasted spice, spring flowers, and damp earth. Shining more for its complexity and elegance than sheer power, it nevertheless has wonderful fruit, plenty of tannins, and a great finish. Give bottles 4-5 years of bottle age and enjoy over the following 15-20 years.

The deep garnet-purple colored 2017 Le Gay is youthfully mute, opening with black cherries, wild blueberries and mulberry scents with suggestions of violets, licorice and black soil. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers beautifully delineated fruit with oodles of freshness and firm yet beautifully ripe tannins, finishing very long and perfumed. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, erobertparker.com, April 2018

This has some eye-opening toasty depths, with warm ganache and vanilla notes leading the way for a very polished core of plum preserve flavors. A bit monochromatic, but it is a pretty color. - James Molesworth (WineSpectator.com, April 2017)

One of the most underrated wines from the Pomerol 'plateau'. Quite tight and backwards but with some dark black fruit underneath. The palate is firm and clean, with pure red and black fruits and some fine minerality. - April 2018

The 2017 Le Gay has a slightly savory bouquet, hints of meat juice infusing the brambly red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, notes of tea leaf, blackberry and raspberry with a slightly hard finish that should soften with bottle age. It is more austere than expected although that can often be the case with the property. A serious Pomerol that will require some bottle age...I just wish it was less "serious"! www.vinous.com

Black with dark purple core. Almost raisiny. Dark and savoury and charry on the palate but there's freshness too. Very dark on the finish. A bit hard and tough overall. - Julia Harding, jancisrobinson.com, April 2018
