1995 Chateau L'Eglise-Clinet, Pomerol

Colour: Red
Vintage: 1995
Region: Bordeaux, Pomerol
% Alcohol: 12.50

Famous for being one of the hardest working vignerons in the whole of Bordeaux, the late Denis Durantou left no stone unturned in his search to get every last ounce of potential from his vines and their very special terroir. A mere 4-and-a-bit hectares of deep clay and gravel soils, planted predominantly to Merlot but with a dose of some of the oldest Cabernet Franc in the region – almost 70 years old – L’Eglise Clinet produces some of the most captivating wine from the Right Bank. They are unashamedly rich and concentrated, but always in perfect balance and harmony with some of the finest, most precise tannins you will find anywhere in Bordeaux; it has slowly gained a legion of followers who will accept no substitute. Whilst Denis will always be synonymous with the estate, his daughters Noemie and Constance who have taken over since his death in early 2020 will undoubtedly continue the excellent work at this prodigious estate. L’Eglise Clinet is not a wine you can rush into. Whilst some Pomerols are plush and generous from the start, this takes time and effort – and will reward the patient.

Tasting Notes and Scores

One of the vintage's most awesome wines, L'Eglise-Clinet's 1995 has been fabulous from both cask and bottle. The color is opaque purple. The wine is closed aromatically, but it does offer a concoction of black raspberries, kirsch, smoke, cherries, and truffles. Full-bodied and rich, with high tannin, but profound levels of fruit and richness, this dense, exceptionally well-delineated, layered, multidimensional L'Eglise-Clinet only hints at its ultimate potential. This looks to be a legend in the making. I could not get over the extraordinary texture of this wine in the mouth. Intensity and richness without heaviness - a tour de force in winemaking! Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030.

Port-like aromas, with loads of ripe raspberry and cherry aromas and just a hint of vanilla. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a rich and wonderful finish. Goes on and on. Big and rich, but still not giving you all it has.--'95/'96 Bordeaux retrospective. James Suckling

Superb deep ruby-red color. Tangy dark berries, smoke and roast coffee on the nose, plus a vaguely gamey, truffley element. Almost painfully intense and sappy today, but this very dense, very sweet wine is beginning to close down. A huge wine whose finishing fruit buries its substantial ripe tannins. Wow!

The Château l'Eglise-Clinet 1995 was served from magnum and bottle side-by-side, both ex-château with Denis Durantou. To be honest, the difference in the bouquet is noticeable, but not huge. They both deliver those knockout savory, Provençal aromas that just soar from the glass. Perhaps it is on the palate that the difference in bottle size makes a tangible difference, since the magnum has a lightness of touch—less heavy in the mouth and more harmonious. It seems as if the tannins have retained their fineness more than the same wine in bottle. There is a touch of menthol just coming through on the finish that is approaching full maturity after 20 years. There is great weight here with a long spicy finish, a Pomerol to savor now and over the next 15-20 years. Tasted March 2015.

Full bottle 1,295 g. Tasted immediately on opening. Transparent dark ruby. Fresh nose that's not as intense as it once was. Rich with no tannin evident. A little bit past its best but still a rich, pleasing wine with a long finish. May open out aromatically once decanted. (JR)
