2001 Chateau L'Eglise-Clinet, Pomerol

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2001
Region: Bordeaux, Pomerol
% Alcohol: 13.50

Famous for being one of the hardest working vignerons in the whole of Bordeaux, the late Denis Durantou left no stone unturned in his search to get every last ounce of potential from his vines and their very special terroir. A mere 4-and-a-bit hectares of deep clay and gravel soils, planted predominantly to Merlot but with a dose of some of the oldest Cabernet Franc in the region – almost 70 years old – L’Eglise Clinet produces some of the most captivating wine from the Right Bank. They are unashamedly rich and concentrated, but always in perfect balance and harmony with some of the finest, most precise tannins you will find anywhere in Bordeaux; it has slowly gained a legion of followers who will accept no substitute. Whilst Denis will always be synonymous with the estate, his daughters Noemie and Constance who have taken over since his death in early 2020 will undoubtedly continue the excellent work at this prodigious estate. L’Eglise Clinet is not a wine you can rush into. Whilst some Pomerols are plush and generous from the start, this takes time and effort – and will reward the patient.

Drink 2008-2020
-Parker's Wine Buyer's Guide No 7

A brilliant effort (one of the vintage's most substantial wines), proprietor Denis Durantou has turned in a tour de force in 2001. Sadly, there are only 1,500 cases of this 85% Merlot / 15% Cabernet Franc blend (from vines averaging 40 years of age). This beauty boasts a dense ruby/purple color as well as a glorious nose of red and black fruits, flowers, sweet oak, and hints of licorice as well as truffles. Opulent, medium to full-bodied, concentrated, tannic, and persistent on the palate (the finish lasts 40 seconds), give it 2-4 years of cellaring, and drink it between 2007-2020.

The 2001 l’Eglise-Clinet is a wine that I have encountered many times both from bottle and magnum. It is a superb Pomerol with a crystalline bouquet that exudes pure red berry fruit laced with smoke and truffle, almost Burgundian in style with immense precision. The palate is medium-bodied with wonderful harmony and precision thanks to its filigree tannin. Such is the elegance on display here that it belies the power and length, ferrous notes, even a hint of curry leaf furnishing the finish. Superb.

Wild and exotic on the nose, with blackberry, meat and spice. Medium- to full-bodied, with super well–integrated tannins and a lovely balance of fruit and spice on the finish. This is really a beauty—a seductive young wine. Just a few notches below the 2000. Best after 2008. 1,330 cases made. — JS

Drank this at Robuchon restaurant in Macau. The three-star Michelin restaurant is amazing and has one of the best wine lists in the world. This res is so sexy. Look for 2001 Pomerol. A wine with layers of aromas of licorice, dark chocolate and berries. Violets. Full to medium body with very fine tannins and a long finish. Just coming around. Pure pleasure.

Full-bodied, rich, concentrated, plummy and round, there is a depth of flavor, dusty tannins, length and structure. The wine is powerful and loads you up with truffle, dark red fruits, earth and dark chocolate.

Good medium ruby. Quintessential Pomerol nose combines roasted black raspberry, coffee liqueur and chocolate. Suave, sweet and voluptuous, with a wonderfully pliant texture and a flamboyantly expressive personality. This sent a shiver of pleasure up my spine. Notes of chocolate liqueur and game, with a complicating mineral component. Hugely rich, sexy wine whose tannins coat the teeth. Silkier and more open today than the 2000, which is a more powerful but more roasted wine, with distinct suggestions of surmaturite and considerable tannic clout.
