2014 Chateau L'Eglise-Clinet, Pomerol

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2014
Region: Bordeaux, Pomerol
% Alcohol: 14.00

Famous for being one of the hardest working vignerons in the whole of Bordeaux, the late Denis Durantou left no stone unturned in his search to get every last ounce of potential from his vines and their very special terroir. A mere 4-and-a-bit hectares of deep clay and gravel soils, planted predominantly to Merlot but with a dose of some of the oldest Cabernet Franc in the region – almost 70 years old – L’Eglise Clinet produces some of the most captivating wine from the Right Bank. They are unashamedly rich and concentrated, but always in perfect balance and harmony with some of the finest, most precise tannins you will find anywhere in Bordeaux; it has slowly gained a legion of followers who will accept no substitute. Whilst Denis will always be synonymous with the estate, his daughters Noemie and Constance who have taken over since his death in early 2020 will undoubtedly continue the excellent work at this prodigious estate. L’Eglise Clinet is not a wine you can rush into. Whilst some Pomerols are plush and generous from the start, this takes time and effort – and will reward the patient.

Tasting Notes and Scores

95 NM

The 2014 L’Eglise-Clinet has a gentle, understated bouquet at first that takes time to open, eventually offering black fruit, melted tar, truffle and bay leaf aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, rather masculine and thickset at the moment, lightly spiced towards the finish. Much like the Vieux-Château-Certan, this is a little awkward in a blind setting however, it clearly meliorates in the glass and I keep on having to up my score. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. - March 2018

The 2014 L'Eglise Clinet is a real head-turner. Gorgeous, super-expressive aromatics meld into a core of dark, sumptuous fruit. Lavender, mint, violets, graphite and crème de cassis notes abound in a powerful, structured wine endowed with magnificent purity and a skyscraper-like sense of lift. Finesse and power collide in a crystalline Pomerol of exceptional beauty. Powerful and dense to the core, the 2014 is shaping up to be one of the wines of the vintage. The blend is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc.

Stands among the top Pomerols in the lineup. Juicy, serious, more in the Lafleur than Le Pin camp in its Left Bank intellectual quality, with graphite and pencil lead showing a serious side despite heavy Merlot dominance in the blend, with a richer fleshier fruit coming through the mid palate, cassis, then raspberry, creme caramel, turmeric, clove. Just a beautiful wine. 70% new oak.

Dark chocolate and slightly savoury notes on the nose. Bright and high toned on the palate, an instant hit of quite high acidity – strawberry and raspberry fruit – before softening with minerality and graphite and pencil shavings coming through. Feels a little disjointed, needs a bit more stuffing to connect the initial flavours with the finish in terms of texture. It's graceful for sure, but leaves you just wanting a bit more density. Yet, the chalky tannins are nice and the subtle liquorice and cool blueberry fruit that lingers on the palate is enjoyable.

Tasted blind. First bottle: mid garnet, sweet fruited and still showing oak sweetness in mocha character on the nose; a suggestion of oxidation and rather drying on the finish.  Second bottle: still a bit drying on the finish but more fruit so the tannins are better balanced. (JH)
