Chateau L'Eglise-Clinet, Pomerol

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2015
Region: Bordeaux, Pomerol

Famous for being one of the hardest working vignerons in the whole of Bordeaux, the late Denis Durantou left no stone unturned in his search to get every last ounce of potential from his vines and their very special terroir. A mere 4-and-a-bit hectares of deep clay and gravel soils, planted predominantly to Merlot but with a dose of some of the oldest Cabernet Franc in the region – almost 70 years old – L’Eglise Clinet produces some of the most captivating wine from the Right Bank. They are unashamedly rich and concentrated, but always in perfect balance and harmony with some of the finest, most precise tannins you will find anywhere in Bordeaux; it has slowly gained a legion of followers who will accept no substitute. Whilst Denis will always be synonymous with the estate, his daughters Noemie and Constance who have taken over since his death in early 2020 will undoubtedly continue the excellent work at this prodigious estate. L’Eglise Clinet is not a wine you can rush into. Whilst some Pomerols are plush and generous from the start, this takes time and effort – and will reward the patient.

Tasting Notes and Scores

99 JS

The violets, roses and dark fruits are so evident but they entice you in a subtle and fresh way. Full-bodied, dense and tannic, yet everything is so in tune with everything else and there are no hard edges or loose ends. It’s like a whirlpool that draws you down and then shows you its beauty. The harmony and complexity is phenomenal. Try in 2024 but I don’t want to wait.

The 2015 L'Eglise-Clinet is one of the wines of the vintage. Even better from bottle than it was from barrel, the 2015 towers out of the glass with stunning power and richness. Super-ripe black cherry, plum, licorice, tobacco and menthol are some of the many notes pulse through this riveting Pomerol. There is plenty of structure, but the tannins are nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. Hints of lavender, smoke, spice, licorice reappear to round out the finish. L'Eglise-Clinet is 90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, aged in 70% new oak. More importantly, the 2015 is a total pleasure bomb. This a fabulous wine from Denis Durantou. Don't miss it. vinous.com, February 2018

Composed of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2015 L'Eglise Clinet comes bursting out of the glass with a gorgeous perfume of exotic spices and potpourri over a core of blueberry compote, red currant jelly, spiced black plums and mulberries with touches of unsmoked cigars, powdered cinnamon and licorice. Big, rich and full-bodied, the palate offers exquisite harmony, packed with exotic spice and red and black fruit layers, finishing on an epically long-lasting mineral note. In an understated word: WOW. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)

The 2015 L'Eglise Clinet is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc that was matured in 70% new oak. It has an engaging, exquisite bouquet with effervescent red cherries, crushed strawberry, cold stone and violet aromas that just leap from the glass. The definition here is astonishingly good. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky smooth, satin-like texture and superb depth with a fine line of acidity, quite saline in the mouth and such effortless balance that you can almost ignore the backbone and structure of this Pomerol. As usual, it is a wine that will benefit from long-term aging—a supreme success for both the vintage and winemaker Denis Durantou and Olivier Gautrat (Denis’s wing man who has been at the property since 2001). Chapeau! Anticipated maturity: 2025 - 2055.

The lynchpin of the stunning Denis Durantou portfolio, l'Eglise Clinet is one of the finest estates on the Pomerol 'plateau'. Tight, closed, just giving up some fine mineral, spice and red fruits. Musky and delicately exotic. Rich, weighty, intense palate with real grip and a core of powerful fruit. Complexity, style and intensity. Long-term potential. (90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc.)

Bordeaux Index

Very restrained and graceful now, this has serious cut and persistence to the blood orange, bitter cherry and plum fruit flavors. Shows a minerally edge through the finish, with ample flesh that should expand a bit more with the élevage. Fresh and long.

Quite soft. Perfumed - floral and possibly violet. Easy and friendly. Quite gentle tannins. Very sweet and round. 14.6% alcohol is not evident. An unexpectedly mild, well-mannered wine. Undramatic. Looks almost modest at this point. Drink 2023-2035.
