2014 Chateau Leoville Las Cases 2eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2014
Region: Bordeaux, Saint-Julien
% Alcohol: 13.50

One of the most legendary wines of Bordeaux, 2nd Growth Leoville Las Cases borders the northern end of St Julien and the southern tip of Pauillac, and carries many of the characteristics of both. Sharing exact proximity to the river with Chateau Latour, and separated from this First Growth only by a meagre dribble of water known as the Ruisseau de Juillac, Las Cases delivers a perfect combination of power and minerality much like its next-door neighbour. It is the largest of the three Leoville properties (Poyferre and Barton being the other two) and arguably the finest estate in St.Julien; at its peak it delivers wines of truly First Growth quality. Las Cases’ stoic proprietor Jean-Hubert Delon and his ultra-talented team, led by Pierre Graffeuille, continue to deliver wines of incredible class, finesse, precision and power. However they are perhaps most notable for their ability to translate every vintage through their very distinctive vineyard character, capturing the earth in every bottle. Truly a very special property indeed.

Tasting Notes and Scores

I love the nose of blackberries, blueberries, flowers and citrus. Hints of stones and wet earth. Full body and ultra-fine tannins that are so long and seamless. Incredible length. A wine that you want to drink now.

A brilliant effort, the 2014 Léoville Las Cases is a tightly wound classic that will delight purists. Mingling aromas of dark berries and cassis with hints of bitter chocolate, sweet spices, cigar wrapper, pencil shavings and sweet new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with tangy acids and a deep, firm mid-palate framed by rich, powdery tannins. Concluding with a long, penetrating finish, the only missing ingredient is time.

Blueberries, green peppercorns, tobacco, liquorice and purple flowers – a lovely nose. Grippy, tense, tangy and precise, you can feel the St-Julien terroir and the Las Cases touch. It's not necessarily up for easy enjoyment now but there's a lovely sense of class about this. Precise and finessed, balanced acidity, a really stony undercurrent and wet stone grip on the finish. Feels young still, like it hasn't quite relaxed, still compact, but so refined! I love the style, one to wait for. Has cool minty freshness too on the finish which gives a nice lift and makes you want to go back for another sip.

Less exuberant than some of its neighbours, as you might expect, but no less exceptional. Very much in the estate signature, demanding attention but expecting you to wait and pay homage until it is ready to speak. Give it time to unveil its muscular, concentrated cassis and bilberry fruits, puncuated by crushed mint leaf, crayon and liqourice bud. Huge depth through the mid palate, serious, structured, very much in the estate signature, showcasing the idea of it being a wine that is Burdundian in its balance of frustration and delight. Huge potential, but as I said last time I tasted it around a year ago, for now it's not giving much away. 50% new oak.

The 2014 Leoville-Las Cases is a blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, with Cabernet Franc and Merlot, cropped at 33 hectoliters per hectare and matured in 85% new oak. There is 6.8% vin de presse this year. Picked between 30 September and 13 October over 12 days. It has a delectable bouquet with very precise, mineral-rich black fruit infused with oyster shell, which appears to be a leitmotif of Jean-Huber Delon's 2014s! The palate is medium-bodied with wondrous purity and tension, the acidity beautifully poised and imparting the palpable sense of energy from start to finish. Where it really excels is on the finish: exquisite structure, very complex with enormous persistence that lingers for more than a minute. Surely the wine of the appellation, ditto one of the best Left Bank 2014s. (Neal Martin)

Readers will have to be patient with the 2014 Léoville-las-Cases, as it is not likely to show well for a number of years. Tightly wound but also medium-bodied and classic in its construction, the 2014 is going to need quite a bit of time to come together. Léoville-las-Cases is so often a wine of power, but here the refined site of the vintage is very much in evidence. The 2014 is a Las Cases built on finesse.

Antonio Galloni

The 2014 Léoville Las-Cases has a (typically) more introverted, tertiary, austere bouquet compared to the Léoville Barton. Despite coaxing it does not possess much lift – sullen, a wine with a "Closed" sign dangling on the front door. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, solid with a sweet core, nicely proportion but just not quite conveying the same joie-de-vivre and energy as its peers. "Perhaps it is saving everything for later?" are the words I penned before this wine's identity is revealed...well, I should have known. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. - vinous.com, March 2018

Tasted blind. Deep garnet. Oak sweetness combines with black fruit and leafy perfume and lead pencil. Very firm, slightly oaky and lots of freshness. Powerful but in balance for the long term. (JH)
