The wine out distances both Leoville Las Cases and Leoville Barton, but all three of them are compelling efforts. Full-bodied, dense purple in color, with floral notes intermixed with blackberries, cassis, graphite and spring flowers, this full-bodied, legendary effort is long and opulent, with wonderfully abundant yet sweet tannin, a skyscraper-like mid-palate and a thrilling, nearly one-minute finish. This spectacular effort from Poyferre that should drink well for 30+ years.

Deep colour, luscious and powerful, has the push and pull of a truly great wine, where you are not exactly sure where you will land but you are fully along for the ride. Brilliant quality, precision, smoke, liquorice, cigar box, cassis, mint leaf etching, rippled with muscle, more Pauillac than St Julien in the 2010 vintage, with decades ahead of it. Great stuff, easily one of the wines of the tasting. 80% new oak. Harvest October 1 to 18.

Intense fruit, perfumed elements with strong wood notes. It's confident and a bit of a show-off, but the fruit and plush tannic chewiness are at the fore, so it avoids overt minerality or leanness, unlike many in the tasting. Has weight and vigour but with freshness and mass appeal. Not so refined, but not harsh either. Cool blueberries and graphite, liquorice elements. Different style to many.

Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux 2010 tasting. The Leoville-Poyferre 2010 dares to challenge Jean-Hubert Delon! It has a wonderful bouquet with vibrant blackcurrant, raspberry and warm gravel scents - very well defined and very focused, the oak seamlessly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with a very pure opening, a fine line of acidity, a cashmere texture and a long silky smooth finish that is very seductive and feminine. There is a lot of panache here - utterly seductive. Tasted January 2014.

Wow. Very intense and aromatic nose with crushed currants and blueberries with hints of nuts and dried flowers. Full body, with very refined tannins and a lovely undercurrent of fruit. Balanced and juicy. Better in 2018.

Good deep ruby-red. Blueberry, crushed cassis and graphite minerality on the youthfully medicinal nose. Plush, broad and deep, but with tangy acidity giving shape and lift to the dark berry and violet flavors. This spreads out to saturate every square millimeter of the palate. As dominated by its tannic structure as this is today, it's a remarkably civilized wine. Give it a decade in the cellar and then enjoy it over the following 20 years.

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Léoville Poyferré opens with notes of sautéed herbs and pencil shavings on the nose, giving way to scents of redcurrant jelly, baked plums and cedar chest plus a waft of cassis. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has pleasant energy and well-played, lightly chewy tannins with compelling freshness on the finish.

2nd Growth St Julien (41hl/ha,14%). Rich and fine but closed, new wood and stoniness and blackberry sweet, cassis fruit; beautifully balanced wine with a superb concentration of core of fruit, a vital acidity and marked, but very refined, velvety textured tannins; long and energetic to taste, great complexity and thoroughbred feel, superb fruit presence, great fruit core length. This appears to have even more of everything than the fine 2009, above all terrific freshness, tenacity and persistence. A great Poyférré, the best since 1961? Features a coating of warm cocoa, with notes of solid currant paste, steeped fig and blackberry fruit. The pastis- and graphite-filled finish pumps along, revealing a well-embedded structure that should soften in the cellar. Best from 2015 through 2030. 17,833 cases made.

(61% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 6% petit verdot and 3% cabernet franc; 3.7 pH; 14% alcohol) Opaque inky-purple. Fruit-driven aromas of plum jam, smoky black cherry and chocolate-covered blackcurrant. Then increasingly austere and tough on the palate, with black fruit flavors hidden beneath a thick coating of oak. The long finish features clove, vanilla and underbrush nuances. This massive Leoville Poyferre will need plenty of time to shed its tannic cloak, but appears to possess enough fruit beneath its oaky veneer.

Really opulent – concentrated and ripe and expressive. Shows off the vintage: pure, pixel-perfect fruit. As such, it has a sort of sheen that could almost use a bit of roughing around the edges, but it remains an immaculate example of the left bank in 2010. (RH)

Pure gold, the 2010 Château Léoville Poyferré, which was drunk beside a perfect 2009 Latour, offers everything you could want from wine. Sporting a deep purple hue as well as an incredible array of crème de cassis, graphite, damp earth, leafy tobacco, and beautifully integrated oak, it hits the palate with an incredible amount of fruit and opulence while always staying pure, precise, and as seamless as they come. It shows the density and power of the 2010 vintage, but it’s remarkable in its balance, purity, and length. As with most 2010s today, it's still youthful and certainly in its early drinking plateau and has another 40-50 years of prime drinking. May 2022
