2004 Les Forts de Latour, Pauillac

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2004
Region: Bordeaux, Pauillac
% Alcohol: 13.00

One of the original 1st Growths in 1855, Latour's reputation for making consistently outstanding wine continues to this day. The consistency of its wines can, to an extent, be attributed to the fact that, since 1670, the estate has only ever had 3 owners. Originally acquired by the Segur family, Latour remained in the hands of their heirs until 1963 when the estate came under British ownership with acclaimed wine writers Hugh Johnson and Harry Waugh serving as advisors. Since 1993, the estate has been under the ownership of Francois Pinault, a lifelong fan of the wines of Latour who, since taking charge, has overseen a string of incredible vintages. Since Pinault took the helm, Latour has been characterised by extraordinary levels of concentration, richness, and structure. Most significantly, following the 2011 vintage Latour opted out of the traditional En Primeur system with the intention of cellaring their wines themselves and only releasing each vintage as and when they believe it is ready. Hence the reason you will find fewer recent vintages of Latour offered than the other leading Bordeaux properties.

Tasting Notes and Scores

94 DWWA

The Forts de Latour was charming from the outset with its moderate concentration of blackcurrant fruit and its well-integrated evolution and notes of cedar and Havana cigar. A lively freshness and enough substance to carry it to a surprisingly long finish complement the first impression. The higher proportion of Merlot than in the grand vin (almost three times more) and lower percentage of new oak ageing seem to have made the wine more approachable at this age. Popular with the tasters, this wine was ranked first in its flight.

[First bottle just a touch of TCA] Dark, brick-rimmed red; freshly sweet and ripe and gently gravelly to smell; a fresh middleweight with a fine, mostly resolved tannin; a ripe, gravelly flavour, juicy, almost a succulence here, long to taste, long and minerally to finish. A fine, complete Les Forts. Now – 2025 [M Schuster March 2014]

A very dark colour. A dark broody nose, quite earthy and damson and even sloes. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, blackberries, a touch of soy, a slight earthiness on the finish. Almost savoury on the off-dry finish. Needs time to mellow out, much more unresolved than the ’02 but I would suggest a better long-term prospect. Drink 2013-2025. Nov 2008

Good full ruby-red. Currant and graphite aromas lifted by enticing spice character. Supple, spicy and sweet, offering an uncanny combination of vibrancy, fat and density. Finishes wonderfully suave and long, with very fine, sweet tannins and terrific lift. This and the 2005 Forts de Latour will make a great pair of vintages to follow.

Deep red. Aromas of blueberry, plum, leather, tobacco and mocha. Sweet, plummy and pliant, with a creamy, fine-grained texture for the vintage. Very plush wine, richer than the 2006 and at least as long. Finishes with big but ripe tannins. May 2007

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 29/06/2007
The estate’s second wine continues to go from strength to strength. The 2004 Forts de Latour (includes 75% Cabernet Sauvignon) reveals a deep ruby/purple hue, classic evolved cedary, lead pencil, and cassis characteristics, medium body, beautiful sweetness of fruit, and a more forward, evolved character than its big sibling. Enjoy it over the next 15+ years. Also tasted: 2004 Pauillac (87)
