2006 Chateau L'Evangile, Pomerol

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2006
Region: Bordeaux, Pomerol
% Alcohol: 14.00

From its enviable terroir sandwiched between La Conseillante, VCC and Petrus and – just over the border into St Emilion – Cheval Blanc, L’Evangile has taken its long-established heritage as one of the top Pomerol producers and, since its purchase by the Lafite side of the Rothschild family, added considerable investment and knowhow to take it to a new level. L’Evangile is one of the major focuses for the DBR (Lafite) Group and Saskia de Rothschild has been focused on pushing the quality ever upwards; it’s clear that they have huge ambitions for the estate. Whilst still dominated by Merlot, the Cabernet Franc element continues to grow in importance as the vines gather age; and in 2019, the first tiny proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon was also included in the blend.

Tasting Notes and Scores

94-96 NM

This is an outstanding wine. A rounded, ripe nose of blackberry, cassis, plum and a touch of sawdust. It could do with a little more delineation but good intensity. Very soft, subtle entry leads to a rich, decadent, fleshy palate with immense power and concentration. Layers of glycerine-rich black fruit, quite a lot of oak, a very ambitious L’Evangile with great length and persistency. Modern winemaking, perhaps lacking some finesse but enormous potential and its breeding just shines through. Tasted February 2008.

The sexy, dark ruby/purple-tinged 2006 l’Evangile achieved 14% natural alcohol, as high as any of the great vintages at this estate. Abundant amounts of dark raspberry and black cherry fruit intertwined with sweet plums and hints of figs as well as spring flowers jump from the glass of this medium to full-bodied, fleshy, supple-textured, silky wine. Drink it now or cellar it for 15-20 years.

(86% merlot and 14% cabernet franc) Good deep red-ruby. Aromas of black raspberry, licorice, espresso and bitter chocolate, with a whiff of pepper. Then lush and sweet but nicely firmed by fresh acidity. This has real fat and a chocolatey ripeness. Finishes with broad, even tannins. Vazart described the 2006 as rounder than the 2004, but will the new vintage have the sheer verve to make an outstanding bottle? The pH here is 3.82, and the wine went through its malolactic fermentation in new barrels.
