2015 Chateau L'Evangile, Pomerol

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2015
Region: Bordeaux, Pomerol
% Alcohol: 15.50

From its enviable terroir sandwiched between La Conseillante, VCC and Petrus and – just over the border into St Emilion – Cheval Blanc, L’Evangile has taken its long-established heritage as one of the top Pomerol producers and, since its purchase by the Lafite side of the Rothschild family, added considerable investment and knowhow to take it to a new level. L’Evangile is one of the major focuses for the DBR (Lafite) Group and Saskia de Rothschild has been focused on pushing the quality ever upwards; it’s clear that they have huge ambitions for the estate. Whilst still dominated by Merlot, the Cabernet Franc element continues to grow in importance as the vines gather age; and in 2019, the first tiny proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon was also included in the blend.

Tasting Notes and Scores

97+ RP

The 2015 L'Evangile is composed of 84% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc and was matured for 18 months in new oak barrels from Tonnellerie des Domaines (their own cooperage). Deep garnet-purple in color, it absolutely leaps from the glass with complex, gregarious notes of blackberry pie, plum preserves, smoked meats/charcuterie, mocha and licorice plus suggestions of cloves, black soil and unsmoked cigars. Full-bodied, rich, opulent and jaw-droppingly sexy, it has beautifully plush yet firm tannins with a lively backbone and a very long, spicy finish. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Interim Issue Mid-February 2018, The Wine Advocate

The 2015 L'Evangile has a very seductive bouquet with ripe red cherries, boysenberry, hints of black truffle and iodine. I love the sheer seductiveness of this wine, which wants to drag you into bed (after enough bottle age). The palate is medium-bodied with a veneer of creamy oak, underneath which lay layers of pure red fruit laced with white pepper, touches of cumin and truffle. This will require several years to fully integrate the oak which is more prominent than its Pomerol peers, but the structure and freshness will see this age with panache and style. Anticipated maturity: 2025 - 2050. - feb 2018

The 2015 L'Évangile is a powerhouse. Rich, deep and ample, the 2015 shows the richer, more potent side of the year. Black cherry, plum, new leather and spice build as this extroverted Pomerol shows off its flamboyant personality. There is not a whole lot of subtlety here. It will be interesting to see if more nuance develops over time. For now, the 2015 is dense and vibrant, that much is obvious. I would give the 2015 at least a few years in bottle to shed some baby fat. vinous.com, February 2018

Bordering Vieux Château Certan and Petrus on the 'plateau', l'Evangile produces a powerful but elegant Pomerol. Deep, savoury and exotically spiced. Dark plum fruit. Very ripe but classy. Thick, unctuous, intensely sweet fruit, chewy, sumptuously fruited. Generous and broad. Long term wine. (84% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc.)

Bordeaux Index

17.5 JR

84% Merlot picked 15 September - 5 October, 16% Cabernet Franc picked 29 September - 5 October.
Extremely dark crimson. Floral, opulent nose. Something quite masculine and leathery - animal? - on the nose. Lots of intensity and sweetness. Almost chocolatey! Tannins not quite integrated yet, but they are quite sandpapery. A little bit of heat on the end. A wine that takes you to the limit of sweetness. 14.8%

Stunning aromas of blackberries, black olives, brown sugar and dried flowers. Tar. Full-bodied, dense and layered. Superfine tannins, yet this is muscular and long. An amazing wine reminiscent of the great L’Evangiles of the 1950s. Straight track. Goes on and on. Truly great wine. Try in 2024. Just a baby.
