Chateau Lynch-Bages 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac

Colour: Red
Vintage: 1996
Region: Bordeaux, Pauillac
% Alcohol: 13.00

Is there a wine anywhere in the world that can boast the global affection and recognition of Château Lynch Bages? Once known as the “poor man’s Mouton” this iconic Pauillac now plays second fiddle to no one, residing as it does in the finest collections and on the most coveted wine lists in the world. Lynch Bages is surely one of the most underrated chateaux when it comes to the 1855 classification of Bordeaux wines, belying its fifth growth status and producing outstanding wines year on year. Under the Cazes family, first Jean-Michel and now his son Jean-Charles, the estate has seen massive investment - most notably a huge, modern new winemaking facility - and the rewards have been duly reaped. Stylistically, Lynch Bages is quintessential Pauillac, highly consistent in quality, with the trademark regional Cabernet Sauvignon character of black fruit, pencil shavings and leather.

Tasting Notes and Scores

Ex-cellar bottle tasted blind at the Lynch Bages vertical. Quite intense, broad, not complex, mulberry, blackberry, a touch of smoke, but there is a slight taint on this bottle. The palate is medium-bodied, chewy entry, coarse tannins, raspberry coulis, a touch of liquorice, very linear and straight-laced towards the sweet-sour, burnt honey finish that is quite glossy. It does not come across as naturally balanced as the 1995…there is something amiss with this sample. Tasted September 2009.

Deep plum in colour, holding its Pauillac character perfectly at 25 years old, opening up to show cedar, pencil shavings, tobacco, graphite, cassis and touches of raspberry purée. This is very much in the drinking window, with waves of camphor, charcoal, woodsmoke and tobacco adding complexity and interest. 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend.

The 1996 exhibits a dark plum/ruby/purple color that is just beginning to lighten at the edge, surprisingly velvety tannins and a classic Pauillac bouquet of lead pencil shavings, cedarwood, black currants, sweet cherries and spice box. This medium to full-bodied, elegant, savory, broad wine is still five years away from full maturity. It should continue to drink well for another 10-15 years.
