2003 Chateau Lynch-Bages 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2003
Region: Bordeaux, Pauillac
% Alcohol: 13.00

Is there a wine anywhere in the world that can boast the global affection and recognition of Château Lynch Bages? Once known as the “poor man’s Mouton” this iconic Pauillac now plays second fiddle to no one, residing as it does in the finest collections and on the most coveted wine lists in the world. Lynch Bages is surely one of the most underrated chateaux when it comes to the 1855 classification of Bordeaux wines, belying its fifth growth status and producing outstanding wines year on year. Under the Cazes family, first Jean-Michel and now his son Jean-Charles, the estate has seen massive investment - most notably a huge, modern new winemaking facility - and the rewards have been duly reaped. Stylistically, Lynch Bages is quintessential Pauillac, highly consistent in quality, with the trademark regional Cabernet Sauvignon character of black fruit, pencil shavings and leather.

A healthy, youthful dark plum/ruby/purple color is followed by a bouquet of smoke, barbecued meats, black currants and new saddle leather. With full body and sweet tannin, this 2003 is strutting its stuff. Although it is not as fine as the 1989, 1990, or 2000, it is a complex, classic Pauillac to enjoy over the next decade.

Tasted at Bordeaux Index’s “10-Year On” tasting in London. The Lynch Bages 2003 has a lifted bouquet of dark cherry, iodine, light floral scents and a touch of cassis. It is nicely defined but would benefit from more vigour. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft, plump opening. It is very smooth in the mouth with subtle meaty notes, yet the finish is missing delineation and tension. It coalesces nicely in the glass but never really lifts off like other vintages of Lynch Bages. Tasted March 2013.

(on its finings) Deep red. Liqueur-like aromas of kirsch, licorice and herbs. Dense and sweet but not overripe or exotic, with medicinal and minty notes characteristic of Pauillac. Seems more pliant than my samples tasted a year ago, even if the tannins are substantial.

(a blend of 75% cabernet sauvignon, 15% merlot, 8% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot; 3.63 pH; 68 IPT; 13.1% alcohol): Deep ruby-red. Superripe aromas of red cherries macerated in alcohol, leather, lead pencil and sweet spices. Very forward and open-knit on the palate, with earthy black fruit flavors complemented by coffee, licorice and bay leaf notes. Turns quite tannic on the moderately long finish. This does not appear to have reached full polyphenolic maturity. Though there is no denying the wine's initial fleshy appeal, I find it a little too astringent and grainy.

75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Aged for 15 months in oak barrels (70% new). Strikingly deep red colour with a touch of brick at the rim. Fragrant nose with dark fruit, graphite and liquorice notes. Liquorice again on the palate as well as telltale freshness. Tannins slightly abrasive on the finish but overall impressive for this hot, dry year. Still has form and substance so not finished yet. (JL)
