2013 Chateau Lynch-Bages 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2013
Region: Bordeaux, Pauillac
% Alcohol: 13.00

Is there a wine anywhere in the world that can boast the global affection and recognition of Château Lynch Bages? Once known as the “poor man’s Mouton” this iconic Pauillac now plays second fiddle to no one, residing as it does in the finest collections and on the most coveted wine lists in the world. Lynch Bages is surely one of the most underrated chateaux when it comes to the 1855 classification of Bordeaux wines, belying its fifth growth status and producing outstanding wines year on year. Under the Cazes family, first Jean-Michel and now his son Jean-Charles, the estate has seen massive investment - most notably a huge, modern new winemaking facility - and the rewards have been duly reaped. Stylistically, Lynch Bages is quintessential Pauillac, highly consistent in quality, with the trademark regional Cabernet Sauvignon character of black fruit, pencil shavings and leather.

Tasting Notes and Scores

92 JS

Aromas of blackberry, black currant and flowers. Full body, ultra-fine tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Extremely well done for the vintage. Drink or hold.

Very dark, rich in oaky blackcurrant aromas and robustly fruity, this certainly has Pauillac typicity. It's velvety as well as concentrated and weighty, and the still-chewy tannins give grip and energy. Long finish, but it's far from elegant. Drinking Window: 2023 - 2026

This solid red sports a tangy iron streak from the start, with lively red currant and briar patch notes forming the core. A zip of savory cuts through the finish, which reveals lightly chewy grip in the end. Best from 2017 through 2023. — JM

The 2013 Lynch-Bages is unusual but also quite pretty. In this vintage the flavors are quite dark, with distinct dark red/purplish overtones. Dried flowers, cloves and sage are some of the notes that develop with time in the glass. The 2013 finishes with lovely length and precision. The blend is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

Ruby-red. Complex aromas of blackberry, espresso, flint and violet. Expansive and sweet on the palate, with almost soft, perfumed flavors of dark berries, sweet spices and white pepper. Offers a lovely combination of sweetness and vibrancy. Finishes firm, with youthfully chewy tannins and a lingering leafy nuance.

The 2013 Lynch-Bages showed a little volatility initially, although this seems to disappear with aeration. It displays red fruit, kirsch and just a touch of fig aromas. Strange for this vintage! The palate has commendable concentration but becomes a little monotone in the glass and lacks a bit of joie-de-vivre. Tasted at the Lynch-Bages vertical at the château.

72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Aged for 18 months in oak barrels (75% new). Red hue but lighter at the rim. Open and fresh with liquorice and herbal notes. Supple fruit on attack with a firmness of tannin behind. Finish perhaps a little tough and certainly shorter but no faults evident. Moderate but one of the better 2013s. (JL)

Mid ruby. Smoky and ripe dark fruit. Juicy at first, then some chocolate sweetness and thick but rounded tannins. Firm and dense and needs quite a bit of time. (JH)
