Chateau Lynch-Bages 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2017
Region: Bordeaux, Pauillac

Is there a wine anywhere in the world that can boast the global affection and recognition of Château Lynch Bages? Once known as the “poor man’s Mouton” this iconic Pauillac now plays second fiddle to no one, residing as it does in the finest collections and on the most coveted wine lists in the world. Lynch Bages is surely one of the most underrated chateaux when it comes to the 1855 classification of Bordeaux wines, belying its fifth growth status and producing outstanding wines year on year. Under the Cazes family, first Jean-Michel and now his son Jean-Charles, the estate has seen massive investment - most notably a huge, modern new winemaking facility - and the rewards have been duly reaped. Stylistically, Lynch Bages is quintessential Pauillac, highly consistent in quality, with the trademark regional Cabernet Sauvignon character of black fruit, pencil shavings and leather.

Tasting Notes and Scores

95 DR

Another wine that is packed with Pauillac signature; one where you feel the tightness and the bristle of the tannins. They have done a great job of carefully extracting the tannins while maintaining a fresh menthol current running through the backbone of the wine. The fruit lacks a little plushness and concentration compared to the 2016 or 2018, but this is impressive. It's a year where names count, and Lynch Bages is claiming its place at the table. Decanter

This is a focused and tight Lynch with beautiful blackcurrants, slate, graphite and lead pencil. Medium to full body. Very fine tannins and brightness. Linear line of tannins that runs nicely through the wine. A blend of 70% cabernet sauvignon, 24% merlot, 4% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot.

A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, brought up in 75% new French oak, the 2017 Chateau Lynch-Bages sports an inky color as well as a powerful, full-bodied style. Rocking blackcurrants, chocolate, smoked tobacco, and obvious minerality all emerge from this beautiful, concentrated wine that has building tannins, the more elegant, silky style of the vintage, a great mid-palate, and a blockbuster finish. It's going to hit the ground running in about 5-7 years and cruise 20 years or more in cool cellars.

The 2017 Lynch-Bages is such a pretty and engaging wine; as always, it is a wine of pure and total seduction. Lush, open-knit and very pretty with ripe red and purplish fruit. There is a slight bit of edginess in the tannin that needs to be resolved, but cellaring should take care of that.

A super effort for the vintage, the vintage, the wine offers ample concentration, round, ripe tannins and big, juicy bite of sweet, fresh Cabernet grapes. Classic in style, with a nice dusty complexity in the texture in the finish, if you can hold off for 7-9 years, this is going to pay big dividends. Tasted May 2020

The 2017 Lynch-Bages has a pure bouquet with ebullient black cherry and blueberry fruit. The oak is neatly integrated, precise and controlled. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit. It's pretty dense with graphite-infused black fruit. This clams up towards a finish that is a little more austere than other recent vintages, although I admire its focus and structure. Great potential. Tasted at the Lynch-Bages vertical at the château. July 2023

There’s really good flesh here for the vintage, with cassis, plum and blackberry compote flavors that are a step ahead of the pack in concentration. Light charcoal and iron notes score the finish, which is racy and fresh. Textbook Pauillac. - James Molesworth, winespectator.com, April 2018

Wine Spectator

92-94+ BI

Making a mockery of its Fifth Growth status, Lynch Bages produces brilliant Cabernet which has a true Pauillac character and real ageability. Backwards and closed but wth a heart of deep, rich, plum and blackcurrant fruit. The structure is towering, grand and impressive, with swet fruit wrapped around those bold tannins. There is real energy here which comes through on the finish, which is extremely pretty. Anotehr top effort. - April 2018

Deepest crimson. Lovely classic aroma of cassis and graphite with an attractive dusty/mineral overlay. Deep and still elegant, with refined dark fruit, super-fine tannins and a long harmonious finish. Shapely and elegant. - Julia Harding, jancisrobinson.com, April 2018
