Tasting Notes and Scores
Plump, with a big core of plum and cherry. Long and silky, with a weighty finish. Typically two-thirds from calcaire and one-third from clay, but equal parts in 2010 due to replanting of some blocks. Tasted non-blind. —J.M.

Attractive nose with fresh leather, plums and orange peel at first. Opens up with raspberries and vanilla. Wonderful sumptuous fruit on the palate with a full body and good length. Smooth tannins and good complexity. Already very enjoyable. Last vintage.

Attractive and elegant, as it always is, with hints of sweet strawberries, crushed chalk, raspberries and cherries, the wine is medium-bodied, relatively rich for a Magdelaine, with an attractive, heady mouthfeel and more suppleness, glycerin and power than this wine – usually a finesse-styled St.-Emilion – normally possesses. Drink it over the next 15-20 years. Drink: 2013 - 2033
In the new St.-Emilion classification, this wine has been fully absorbed by the Moueix family’s other nearby historic estate, Belair-Monange, so this 2010 is something of a collector’s item.

2010: Normally one of the most elegant, kirsch-laden wines of the appellation, this property (owned by the Moueix family) has produced an opaque purple-hued 2010 revealing lots of minerality intermixed with deep, black raspberry and black cherry fruit, a rich, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel and abundant tannin. Along with the 2009, the dense 2010 is one of the richest Magdelaines I have ever tasted. However, it will require patience, so cellar it for 5-6 years and enjoy it over the following two decades.

(14.5% alcohol): Bright red-ruby. Lovely perfume of strawberry, plum and rose petal, enlivened by a chalky mineral element. Round and seamless in the mouth but very vinous and not at all overly sweet, with a strong potpourri element. More minerally and less velvety than many 2010 Saint-Emilion wines, and still youthfully tight today. But this is built to age.

St Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé (35hl/ha,14-14.2%) Ripe and very mineral to smell; a rich, vigorous Magdelaine, firmly but finely tannic, generous, close knit, and with an unusual density for the cru; concentrated in savour, briskly defined, likely to be a bit angular for some time because of its vitality; concentrated, firm, vital elegance with excellent mineral length alongside the tensely ripe red berry fruit character. Red berry fruit because the acidity is so pronounced, plus an almost dark chocolate, black fruit character because the fruit was so ripe. Long term structure. 2022-35+ [M.Schuster, Bordeaux Mar/Apr 2011]

Tasted at Ets J-P Moueix, the Magdelaine 2010 has a lovely rounded generous bouquet of fresh strawberry, dark plum, mulberry and a touch of vanilla. It is very harmonious, with some dark chocolate notes emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly irony entry. It is taut and linear, much more reticent than the nose suggests, but imbued with great freshness on the finish, whilst the citric aftertaste is very appealing. This is a fine Magdelaine that might give more with continued bottle age. Tasted November 2012.

A lucid garnet/ruby colour, there is just a touch of herbaceousness on the nose of this Magdelaine that merely lends intrigue. Dark berried fruits, a touch of warm roof tiles on a summer's day, a faint touch of truffle emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a citric-thread of acidity on the entry, quite sharp and pointed at the moment, leading to a tensile, almost peppery finish. This is an intriguing Magdelaine that I feel will show better after bottling (as it always does.) Tasted April 2011.

Deep purple-ruby. Fresh plum, cassis, sweet spices and coffee on the perfumed nose. Then big and rich on the palate, with a fleshy mouthfeel to the ripe red fruit and mineral flavors lifted by an intriguing note of white pepper. Finishes moderately long and smooth. Although I love Magdelaine's refined charm and rarely find the wine as light as some other critics do, I do think this version is almost too delicate.
