Chateau Margaux Premier Cru Classe, Margaux

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2012
Region: Bordeaux, Margaux

One of the most famous names in the world of wine, the quality of Chateau Margaux has been well documented since the 18th century, with British Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole and US Ambassador Thomas Jefferson among its followers. Despite an amazing effort in 1953, the wines of Chateau Margaux struggled for several decades during the 20th century to achieve the same level of quality it had previously become famous for. It wasn't until the purchase of the estate in 1977 by the Mentzelopoulos family, and the 1983 appointment of Paul Pontallier as manager, that the fortunes of this great estate turned around. Andre Mentzelopoulos invested huge amounts of money into the estate and the results were almost immediate with a stellar wine produced in 1978. When Andre passed away suddenly shortly after, it was left to his 25-year old daughter Corinne to take over - and alongside Pontallier she created a modern legacy for the estate with three and a half decades of brilliant vintages. After Paul Pontallier’s tragic death in early 2016, Philippe Bascaules took over as General Manager and the estate continues to thrive. As Neal Martin summarises: “The fundamental virtue of a great Château Margaux is poise; the way it tiptoes on the palate like a ballerina, full of strength and grace.”

[90CS/10M/2CF/2PV] An intense Cabernet Sauvignon nose, ripe, floral, sweet cored and minerally; beautifully balanced, concentrated, wonderfully fresh and with plenty of firm yet superfine tannin, a striking combination of class, harmony, intensity and delicacy. Long, sweet cored, very mineral to taste with a First Growth’s clear mouthcoating character and the effortlessness of a great wine, at once intense and discreet and with great length of flavour and magnificent persistence. A beguilingly floral Margaux perfume, a quite lovely texture, and remarkable gentleness for such intensity. A great Château Margaux 2027-40+. 13%

The 2012 Château Margaux is showing much differently from bottle than it did from cask. Seemingly much fuller and richer, it has a dense ruby/purple color, representing a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest mostly Merlot, as well as only 33% of their harvest. It possesses hints of spring flowers intermixed with blueberries, blackberries and cassis fruit, moderate tannin, a multi-dimensional mouthfeel, and a long, structured finish. This 2012 was charming, up-front and precociously styled from barrel, but in bottle it is more masculine, dense and rich. This wine needs a good 5-7 years of cellaring, and should keep well for 25 or more years. This is a great effort from Château Margaux, and should handsomely repay those who buy it. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2040. 95 points – Robert Parker (Wine Advocate #218, April 2015)

Bay leaf and menthol hints lift a core of crushed plum and warm cherry confiture notes while the background fills steadily with black tea, singed alder and iron elements. Turns a little darker on the finish, with a coating of bittersweet cocoa powder and roasted vanilla bean accents, while the minerality stays buried for now. Remarkably dense and packed, yet refined. Needs some time to unwind. Best from 2018 through 2030. 10,833 cases made. – James Molesworth (WineSpectator.com, March 2015)

The 2012 Château Margaux is a wine that, based on this showing, is a little closed at the moment and needs the most coaxing from the glass. Plenty of black fruit in situ, although it does not really blossom. It is very well-balanced, quite deep and powerful, but it needs time to develop refinement on the finish. Cellar for another few years. Tasted blind in Bordeaux.

Wonderful aromas of flowers such as roses, violets, strawberries and a hints of wet earth. Wet stones as well. Full to medium body, very firm tannins and a long, racy finish. Minerals and chalk on the aftertaste. Needs three to five years to soften. Better in 2020. – jamessuckling.com, Feb 2015

(87% Cabernet Sauvignon/10% Merlot/2% Cabernet Franc/1% Petit Verdot)
Quite tight nose but lifted, floral - that Margaux perfume - just bursting to get out. Mouthfeel is so glossy and soft. Multidimensional, elegant and effortless fruit, gravel and the length is impressive. A beautifully made wine.

Tasted blind. Real interest on the nose. Very charming and beautifully balanced. Great poise. More forward than some though. Massive fruit hides the pretty massive tannins. – jancisrobinson.com, Jan 2016
