2007 Chateau Montrose 2eme Cru Classe, Saint-Estephe

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2007
Region: Bordeaux, Saint-Estephe
% Alcohol: 12.50

Montrose is one of the greatest estates in Bordeaux. Its spectacular terroir in the prime sector of St Estephe has been brought to its pinnacle by owner Martin Bouygues and his team, leading to a run of sublime performances over a decade long; in a number of these vintages, it stands scrutiny as a potential ‘wine of the vintage’. Saint-Estephe is the Médoc’s most northerly commune, lying just beyond the confines of Pauillac, and stretches up the Gironde estuary, a mere 50 kilometre swim away from the Atlantic Ocean. The soil boasts a larger proportion of clay than the rest of the Médoc which, in the past, has lent the wines a traditional austerity requiring lengthier aging than their cousins further south. With climate change, however, where long periods of intense sunshine and near drought conditions have become the norm, vines planted in the commune’s moisture-retaining clay have thrived and few exemplify this better than the exceptional Chateau Montrose.

Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Montrose has a crisp, earthy, tobacco-scented bouquet with sage and clove developing in the glass—clearly a Saint Estèphe that is determined to succeed in an off-vintage, which this estate is masterful at doing. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin. This bottle felt compact for this vintage, one of the few 2007s that merit decanting. However, there is undeniably plenty of freshness and a welcome touch of spice towards the finish. Linear in style, this is one of the few 2007s that should improve with bottle age. Tasted February 2017.

One of the stars of the vintage, the 2007 Montrose boasts a deep blue/purple color as well as a sweet bouquet of creme de cassis, crushed rocks, and spring flowers. Dense and opulent with silky tannins, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, a long finish, and no hard edges, this beauty should drink well for 15+ years.

The first vintage produced from start to finish under the Bouygues family's ownership (they acquired the property in May 2006), the 2007 Montrose offers up attractive aromas of cassis, tobacco leaf, loamy soil and oak vanillin, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy palate that's supple, pure and velvety. This is far from my favorite Médoc vintage, but Montrose is clearly one of the stars.

(12.8% alcohol; 64% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 5% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot) Bright ruby-red. Subdued aromas of currant, licorice and tobacco leaf. Suave and sweet for St. Estephe, with a currant flavor complicated by olive, mocha, shoe polish, mint and a light saline nuance. Offers good volume and breadth for the year and expands nicely on the back end. Finishes with sweet, silky tannins, a light herbal element and decent cut.

64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot. Harvested 20 Sept to 11 Oct. Garnet hue with brick at the rim. Lighter than 2006 but fruit apparent. Open and more evolved on the nose. Briary fruit with a leafy, herbal twist and a hint of oak. Supple fruit on the palate with marked acidity keeping it fresh. Slight greenness to the tannins. Smack in its drinking window now. (JL)

Dark and youthful-looking. Smells much younger than most in this tasting. Dark and spicy. Fine texture, fresh, just needing a little more fruit in the middle in an ideal world but just holds the balance. (JH)
