2013 Chateau Montrose 2eme Cru Classe, Saint-Estephe

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2013
Region: Bordeaux, Saint-Estephe
% Alcohol: 13.00

Montrose is one of the greatest estates in Bordeaux. Its spectacular terroir in the prime sector of St Estephe has been brought to its pinnacle by owner Martin Bouygues and his team, leading to a run of sublime performances over a decade long; in a number of these vintages, it stands scrutiny as a potential ‘wine of the vintage’. Saint-Estephe is the Médoc’s most northerly commune, lying just beyond the confines of Pauillac, and stretches up the Gironde estuary, a mere 50 kilometre swim away from the Atlantic Ocean. The soil boasts a larger proportion of clay than the rest of the Médoc which, in the past, has lent the wines a traditional austerity requiring lengthier aging than their cousins further south. With climate change, however, where long periods of intense sunshine and near drought conditions have become the norm, vines planted in the commune’s moisture-retaining clay have thrived and few exemplify this better than the exceptional Chateau Montrose.

91-94 AG

Graphite, camphor, incense, tobacco, smoke and game burst from the glass in the 2013 Montrose. A dark, brooding wine, the 2013 boasts notable depth and tannin considering its mid-weight structure. The 2013 will require at least a few years to come together. Graphite, scorched earth, sage and rosemary are some of the notes that inform the intense finish. This has real density for the year. Based on two tastings so far, the 2013 Montrose is making a very strong case for itself as one of the wines of the vintage. The blend is 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, with quite a bit more Cabernet than the more typical 55%.

Antonio Galloni

91-92 JS

A firm Montrose with very silky tannins and a pretty acid, fruit balance. Full body. Integrated and seamless for the vintage. Spicy undertones. A blend of 68% cabernet sauvignon, 29% merlot and 3% petit verdot.

The 2013 Montrose has an understated, lilting bouquet with blackberry and briary scents and dried rose petals, gaining more intensity as it opens over 2-3 minutes in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. It shows good weight in the mouth, quite linear and masculine (typical for Montrose) but there is respectable detail and mineralité coming through on the satisfying finish. Not a top tier Montrose, but then again, why would it be in this difficult vintage. It will still give pleasure over the next 12-15 years.

89.5 IDA

(68% cabernet sauvignon, 29% merlot and 3% petit verdot): Bright ruby-red. Perfumed red fruit aromas are complicated by peppermint and flint on the pure nose. Crisp and fresh, with vibrant flavors similar to the aromas, but hard as nails now. Finishes long, tight and austere, with a steely minerality and a violet topnote. Given Montrose's track record for gaining in volume and flesh while aging in the bottle, I am hopeful that this will develop more charm and sweetness in the process. Very clean and precise: Montrose had fewer botrytis problems than most other Medoc estates thanks to the windy conditions on the plateau where this estate's vineyards are located.

A more than honorable performance in a vintage best forgotten, the 2013 Montrose reveals aromas of dark berries and cedary new oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich palate framed by firm, powdery tannins. I suspect it will be at its best over the coming six or seven years, making it an atypically short-lived wine by this estate's standards.

Tasted blind. Fragrant and dark fruited on the nose. Deep, chewy and more generous than most. (JH)

68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot. Harvested 26 Sept to 16 Oct. Hervé Berland takes over as general manager. Garnet hue but limpid at the rim. Aromatically open and appetising with briary fruit, lanolin and leather notes. Generous fruit on the palate but slightly drying and short on the finish. Good for the vintage but for drinking in the short term. (JL)
