Tasting Notes and Scores
Brings together the florality of Armailhac and the dense fruit of Clerc Milon, all with the volume turned up. Clear concentration and structure here, powerful Pauillac tannins and a juicy finish - easily one of the wines of the vintage in Pauillac. And despite the challenges of the vintage, it has plenty of seductive Mouton signature - touches of gourmet edging, smoke, liquorice, bitter chocolate shavings, pencil lead, a ton of Pauillac character. It is well measured and grips through the palate. Harvest 12-28 September. We were at a time here when Mouton could barely put a foot wrong, great stuff from Philippe Dhalluin. This delivers a gorgeously pure beam of cassis and cherry compote, with singed apple wood, graphite and iron notes hanging in the background for now. Long and polished through the finish, showing serious depth in reserve. Best from 2018 through 2035. – James Molesworth (WineSpectator.com, March 2014)

This is now a little tight but shows firmness and raciness with pretty austerity. Full and tight with silky tannins and a long, fresh finish. Firm acidity is holding it back. Needs two or three years to open. Better in 2018. – jamessuckling.com, Nov 2015

This was as you would expect: incredibly tight, focused, correct and masculine. With supple texture and firm tannins there wasn’t much fruit at this early stage - however the finish gave a haunting whisper of violets and cassis which lingered long. It’s clearly a top-drawer glass of cabernet, arguably not much joy showing at this stage but undoubtedly this will become a very good Mouton (Also worth saying that the Petit Mouton was much more approachable at this stage, showing juicy fruit and zippy freshness.)
Bordeaux Index
[90CS/7M/3CF] Soft, fragrant, ripe fruit and mineral nose, a touch new wood cedary; effortlessly balanced wine of moderate concentration, but lovely overall harmony, with a firm, fine grained tannin and freshly defining acidity, long and subtle to taste, gently ripe in flavour, gently mineral in aromas, a fine tenacity of flavour, all at a mezzoforte dynamic, with the firm tannin texture more apparent on the back palate, followed by a fine, sweet fruited persistence. Refined, harmonious, elegant Mouton, slender but complete. Firm texture suggests this will need 15 years. 2025-40 [M.Schuster, Bordeaux Mar/Apr 2012]

Tasted twice, two weeks apart at the property. The 2011 is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc (the first time it has been blended since 2005) and cropped at 30.1hl/ha. It has a tightly wound Cabernet nose with graphite and cedar aromas, blackberry and a touch of cassis. Leaving the glass to one side, there is fine minerality and delineation here. The palate is very composed on the entry with supple tannins that are a little thicker and more saturated than Lafite. This has very good density, more like Latour than Lafite and a silver thread of acidity (pH 3.8). It has superb precision and tension on the finish that does not quite possess the persistency that a great vintage would have given. But this is still very impressive: a quintessential Mouton that may warrant a higher mark after bottling. – eRobertParker.com, May 2012

The evolved, fresh, mid-weight 2011 Mouton-Rothschild is charming and complete. It is an over-achieving effort in a challenging vintage with supple tannins, notes of cedarwood, forest floor, underbrush, licorice, graphite and red and blackcurrants. Medium-bodied, lush and sexy, it can be consumed over the next 10-15+ years. 92 points – Robert Parker (Wine Advocate #216, Dec 2014)

90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc. Lots of temporary vat houses while the work was going on.
Light and a bit disjointed. Bit of chocolate, bit of acid, bit jagged. Lots of structure. Drink: 2022-2035 – jancisrobinson.com, Juillet 2015
