Chateau Palmer 3eme Cru Classe, Margaux

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2008
Region: Bordeaux, Margaux

Chateau Palmer, a distinctive turreted chateau, is situated adjacent to Bordeaux's Route du Vin, located in the middle of the tiny village of Issan. Palmer is a classified third growth and is certainly the top estate of the Margaux appellation after the first growth of its namesake - indeed matching it on occasion. Over generations Palmer has engendered an affection other Bordeaux names can only dream of. The somewhat inconsistent wines of the past are now gone, with serious investment in research and development in both vineyards and cellars with in-house scientists and technicians on the payroll. This ethos also extends to a rigorous pursuit of sustainable farming with 15 Bordelaise cows and 20 Landais sheep, rare local breeds, roaming the estate’s pastures as nutrients for the soil and ruminants for the grass. Now fully biodynamic, the strict adherence to which means running (and accepting) the risk of losing significant proportions of a difficult harvest, Chateau Palmer continues to carve a unique place in Bordeaux’s hierarchy in terms of global recognition as well as quality, constantly challenging the First Growths’ hegemony.

Tasting Notes and Scores

95 NM

The 2008 Palmer has a very intense bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, crushed violet and iris scents, blossoming in the glass whilst retaining superb delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine but quite rounded tannin that frame the pure blackberry and raspberry fruit. There are touches of white pepper and clove towards the finish, completing quite a superb Margaux from Thomas Duroux. Equal with Château Margaux? It might even be better... Medium-deep saturated color. Somewhat restrained nose at first, but it opens as it sits, revealing scents of ripe black fruits, smoke, licorice, leather, and forest floor. There’s a tannic bite on entry, but plenty of rich fruit behind it. This is a dense, intense, complex, and very youthful wine. We are impressed by the velvety texture and uplifting acidity. The fruit keeps getting more and more attractive as it sits. Long, consistent finish. Obviously needs cellaring, but we were certainly off on a strong note.

A stunning success for the vintage, and possibly the Margaux of the year, this wine, which achieved 13.5% natural alcohol, is a blend of 51% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Petit Verdot. Loads of barbecue smoke, licorice, incense, blackberry, new saddle leather and forest floor notes jump from the glass of this dense, purple-colored wine. Extraordinarily intense and full-bodied, with plenty of tannin, but not the formidable structure of the 2010, this is going to be one of the longest-lived wines of 2008. It is full, rich, layered, and should be reasonably approachable with 3-4 years of bottle age, and will also keep for 30+ years.

The 2008 Palmer, which tips the scales at 13.5% natural alcohol (among the highest achieved at this property), is a blend of 51% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8% Petit Verdot. It is a massively rich wine with an inky/purple color, sensational density of fruit, velvety tannins, a glorious bouquet of black fruits, licorice, incense, and subtle barbecue smoke, a superb, full-bodied mouthfeel, and a fabulous texture and length. With several minutes of swirling, an enticing floral note emerges. The wine's glycerin and sweetness suggest it will be approachable 3-4 years after bottling, yet keep for three decades or more. It appears to be among the finest Palmers made this decade, rivaling both the 2005 and 2000.

A wine that’s just now starting to hit prime time, the 2008 Palmer is a blend of 51% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Petit Verdot that was brought up in plenty of new oak. This medium to full-bodied effort offers a youthful, vibrant ruby/purple color as well as a smoky, dark-fruited style as well as notes of chocolate and earthy minerality. With beautiful concentration, still-present ripe tannins, and a great finish, it’s a great drink today, yet I suspect it has another 30 years in it. It’s a beautiful Palmer that shows the classic style of the vintage.

Palmer knows what to do. Plenty of blackberry and licorice aromas and flavors follow through to full body, with chewy tannins and a vanilla, cedar and chocolate aftertaste. Needs time to mellow. Layered and beautiful.

Full medium ruby. Inviting, almost liqueur-like aromas of dark raspberry, sexy spices and tobacco lifted by a floral quality. Broad and plush but precise and fine-grained, with a layered texture to the concentrated flavors of red and dark berries and dark chocolate. Really builds toward the back but the wine's compelling thickness of fruit is nicely leavened by sneaky minerality. Finishes with noble tannins and captivating energy and perfume.
