Tasting Notes and Scores

87-89 ST

Bright red-ruby. Less profound, more developed aromas of coffee, iron, meat and damp earth—the other side of Burgundy. Harder and less ripe than the '95, with less delineation. Lean and correct, but doesn't have the middle-palate texture and extract to buffer the slightly dry tannins and thus comes across as a bit tough.

A bit hard around the edges, this dark plum/garnet-colored wine shows notes of red currant, sweet tobacco, dried herbs, and coffee in a restrained, measured style, with some tannin in the finish. This wine may have a tendency to become increasingly attenuated with cellar age. Anticipated maturity: Now-2012. Last tasted, 4/02.
