2004 Chateau Pape Clement Cru Classe, Pessac-Leognan

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2004
Region: Bordeaux, Pessac-Leognan
% Alcohol: 14.99

Since 2005 Pape Clement has been growing in fame across the world. Owner Bernard Magrez, described by Robert Parker as “one of Bordeaux’s most interesting visionaries”, was once the owner of multiple wine estates across Bordeaux; however he disposed of virtually all these‘lower ranked’ properties in order to focus on the cru classes, and in particular, his ‘jewel in the crown’ Pape Clement. This is definitely an estate which has moved up the ranks: as Parker also says of M. Magrez “He has done a remarkable job in turning around this once moribund property that made a bevy of undrinkable wines into one of the superstars of Bordeaux.” Just a stone’s throw from Haut Brion, it has had a superb period since the start of this century, racking up a series of high scores from Parker, culminating in the perfectly-scored 2022

Tasting Notes and Scores

91 RMPJ

This brilliant blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon and 46% Merlot (which was harvested very late) reveals complex aromas of lead pencil shavings, burning embers, black currants, cherries, and blackberries as well as a subtle smoky charcoal component. Medium to full-bodied and spicy with sweet tannin and an opulent, fleshy personality, it is a terrific effort from this great Pessac-Leognan vineyard. Consume it now and over the next 15+ years.

Full red-ruby. Vinous aromas of currant, milk chocolate, tobacco, hot stones and leather. Juicy and fresh but leaner than the 2005 or 2006, with classically dry flavors of redcurrant, plum and smoke. In contrast to the showy 2005, this seems to be going into a shell, with the serious tannins currently dominating the wine's fruit.

Fresh. Zesty. Good point to drink it now. Sweet edge. (JR)
