2015 Le Pauillac de Chateau Latour, Pauillac

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2015
Region: Bordeaux, Pauillac
% Alcohol: 13.50

One of the original 1st Growths in 1855, Latour's reputation for making consistently outstanding wine continues to this day. The consistency of its wines can, to an extent, be attributed to the fact that, since 1670, the estate has only ever had 3 owners. Originally acquired by the Segur family, Latour remained in the hands of their heirs until 1963 when the estate came under British ownership with acclaimed wine writers Hugh Johnson and Harry Waugh serving as advisors. Since 1993, the estate has been under the ownership of Francois Pinault, a lifelong fan of the wines of Latour who, since taking charge, has overseen a string of incredible vintages. Since Pinault took the helm, Latour has been characterised by extraordinary levels of concentration, richness, and structure. Most significantly, following the 2011 vintage Latour opted out of the traditional En Primeur system with the intention of cellaring their wines themselves and only releasing each vintage as and when they believe it is ready. Hence the reason you will find fewer recent vintages of Latour offered than the other leading Bordeaux properties.

Tasting Notes and Scores

A firm and linear red with currant, blackberry and stone aromas and flavors. Full yet closed and tight. Acidity drives this one. Third wine of Paulliac. Serious. Needs two or three years to come together.

James Suckling

The 2015 Le Pauillac de Chateau Latour is a blend of 54.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41.7% Merlot and 4.1% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple colored, it sails out of the glass at a fantastic clip, delivering wonderfully fragrant notes of baked blackberries, blueberry compote and redcurrant jelly with hints of licorice, red roses and cigar box. Medium-bodied, generously fruited, open-knit and tantalizingly drinkable right now, the palate is chock-full of expressive red and black fruits, featuring approachable, ripe, soft tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with compelling purity. Very impressive showing!

Pretty closed up, as many of the 2015s are. Extremely concentrated, touches of black pepper and chocolate, but the tannins remain fairly bulky for the moment, and I would suggest giving it another few years in bottle. A vintage that saw the estate working fully organically across all the vineyard for the first time (although not certified until 2018 vintage). This does not go through the Place de Bordeaux, and is sold directly by Latour.

The third wine of the great Château Latour. Nice deep, dark fruit. Firm structure, with decent dark fruit concentration. Finishes a little short. (54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot.)

The 2015 Pauillac de Château Latour is a great introduction to the vintage. Round, succulent and juicy, the 2015 offers lovely depth and radiance throughout. Bright red stone fruit nuances dominate in a wine that will be absolutely delicious whenever Latour decides to release it. Winemaker Helene Genin's decision to add a bit less press wine than normal, along with the radiance of the vintage, has yielded an especially forward, fruit-driven wine in 2015. Tasted two times.

Silky and very fresh in feel, with delightful black cherry and plum compote notes lined with subtle black tea and graphite hints. Shows some sneaky density on the back end.

54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot. Hot, dry June and July preceded very wet August and September, Pauillac being much wetter in mid September than, for example, Margaux, which diluted the grapes. Unsettled conditions for harvest increased the risk of rot. Merlot picked 15–21 September and Cabernet 28 September to 10 October. This was Latour's first vintage when the vineyards were fully organic (2018 was the first to be certified organic in the cellar). There's a real commitment here. Deep crimson. Ripe nose but cool and fresh on the palate. Still quite tough and unfriendly. Needs time! (JR)
