Tasting Notes and Scores

A beautiful crushed rock/liqueur of minerality characterizes this inky/purple-hued St.-Emilion. Tannic, with lots of pure black raspberry and black cherry fruit intermixed with a notion of charcoal as well as the aforementioned rocky/powdered stone component, this long distance runner requires another 5-6 years of cellaring. It should age easily through 2030+.

This is a beauty, with a really pure and still-youthful beam of plum, boysenberry and raspberry compote flavors streaming through, gilded with fruitcake and a hint of sweet cocoa, but ultimately carried by a long graphite spine. Rather open through the finish despite the youthful persona, and hard to resist now.--Blind 2000 Bordeaux retrospective (December 2015). JM

The 2000 Pavie-Macquin is opulent and intense, but also rather monolithic. I don't expect that cellaring is going to make much of a difference. Dried cherry, leather, cedar, tobacco, menthol and licorice add a measure of nuance. I wanted more given the reputation of the year. In my view, the 2000 is too evolved for its age.

Saturated ruby. Profound nose combines black raspberry, dark chocolate, violet, minerals, truffle and burnished oak. Dense, lush and seamless; large-scaled and deep. This easily fills the entire mouth. Wonderfully sweet wine, with complicating notes of game and truffle, but with plenty of structure underneath. Finishes very suave and long, with tannins thoroughly enrobed by the wine's gras None of the estate's cabernet sauvignon was added to the blend in 2000.

(13.8% alcohol; 3.63 pH): Bright red with a pale rim. Candied violet, cherry cola, almond paste and savory herbs on the expressive nose. Smooth and suave on entry, then lively and bright in the middle, delivering opulent red cherry, mineral and floral flavors of uncommon purity and poise. Outstanding length and balance on the perfumed, seamless finish. Another standout wine by Thienpont and Derenoncourt. Surprisingly drinkable already but has the stuffing to age and improve for at least another 15 years. Apparently, no cabernet sauvignon was included in this blend.

The 2000 Pavie-Macquin has a high-toned bouquet with black cherries, cassis and a very slight acetic notes that is a little distracting. Still, the palate is full-bodied and loaded with glycerol lending it a very modern sheen, sumptuous heady dark fruits with a very sweet, seductive finish. Not my style of Saint Emilion, but well crafted and should not be approached for several years. Tasted November 2010.

Medium ruby-red. Superripe, inviting aromas of raspberry, game, coffee and woodsmoke. Fat, lush and mellow, with rich raspberry, game and truffle flavors. This boasts a velvety, utterly seamless texture, with perfectly integrated acids giving the wine shape. Really expands in the mouth, displaying the volume and generosity of the vintage's best examples. Finishes with big but lush tannins and lingering sweet fruit.
