Tasting Notes and Scores
The 2017 Pavie Macquin is deep garnet-purple in color and opens with flamboyant notes of warm black and red plums, black cherries and tilled soil with delicate touches of cloves, star anise, red roses and forest floor. Medium-bodied with a firm backbone of very finely grained, very ripe tannins and tons of freshness, it has wonderfully elegant yet intense fruit layers and a long, minerally finish. Just beautiful. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, erobertparker.com, April 2018

Drunk at home over supper with friends, this gorgeous Pavie Macquin was more proof for me that the 2017s - particularly those on St Emilion's clay limestone plateau - are tasting exceptional right now. It's not a vintage with the kind of structure to really lay down for long ageing, but I thoroughly recommend enjoying the sappy blueberry and redcurrant fruits, saffran and salt-scrape of limestone with sculpted tannins. A definite contender for Christmas drinking. Jane Anson Nov 2023 - Inside Bordeaux

A mouth-filling wine with supple and complete tannins that are caressing and engaging. Fascinating aromas and flavors of blackberries, iodine and violets. Extremely long and beautiful.

Coming from a cool terroir located on the upper plateau, just behind Chateau Pavie, the 2017 Chateau Pavie Macquin checks in as a mix of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that spent 16 months in 70% new French oak. This wine is always closed, tannic, and hard to understand in its youth, yet blossoms with 7-8 years of bottle age. The 2017 sports a deep, purple/ruby color as well as beautiful notes of black raspberries, cassis, huge minerality, white flowers, and loamy earth. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, yet silky and seamless on the palate, it doesn't have the sheer weight and flesh of the 2015 and 2016 yet is flawlessly balanced, has terrific tannins, and a great finish. It will be drinkable with just 4-6 years of bottle age and cruise for 15-20 years or more.

A sexy, racy wine, the 2017 Pavie Macquin is full of personality. A rush of sweet red cherry, plum, rose petal, mint and blood orange infuses this sumptuous, racy Saint-Émilion. A wine of striking purity and total class, Pavie Macquin dazzles. As always, Pavie Macquin is marked by stunning fruit purity, red fruit, soft contours and silky, voluptuous tannins. In 2017, the blend has a bit more Cabernet Franc than in the past, now that younger vineyards have come online. - vinous.com, May 2018

The 2017 Pavie-Macquin was impressive from barrel and now in bottle, it continues to show potential. The bouquet is very pure with small dark cherries, cassis, violet and peony aromas. The new oak is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins that belie the backbone of this Saint-Émilion. There is a citric element that suffuses the intense black fruit laced with graphite and tar, the limestone soils offering freshness on the finish. Excellent. www.vinous.com

Deliciously engaging, with a pure, aromatic display of boysenberry and blackberry fruit running through, picking up light bramble and anise accents along the way. Fresh and nicely defined, showing plenty of crackle on the finish. - James Molesworth, winespectator.com, April 2018

A St Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classe, Pavie Macquin has been producing first class wines for the last ten years. Their 15 hectares of vineyards are located on the Cote Pavie, adjacent to Chateau Pavie's vineyards. Nicolas Thienpont of VCC has been in charge since 1990. Opulent and powerful on the nose with a healthy lick of oak and polish. Oodles of upfront fruit, sweetness and brightness. Really juicy and exotic, altogether an impressive wine in a broad, succulent Right Bank style. - April 2018

Dark smudgy crimson. Pretty cassis aroma, with the graphite of Cabernet Franc and a touch of elderberry. Mouth-watering freshness, really fruity and rounded. Not fleshy; tight and balanced. Alive and persistent but not a great amount of depth. - Julia Harding, jancisrobinson.com, April 2018
