Chateau Pavie Premier Grand Cru Classe A, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2017
Region: Bordeaux, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

There are few chateaux which have had as meteoric a rise as Chateau Pavie. Thanks to the modern and innovating work of owner Gerard Perse, Chateau Pavie has become one of the most iconic estates in Bordeaux. Since taking over in 1998, there have been dramatic changes in quality: a simple look at Robert Parker’s scores says it all, with six wines from 1998-2016 scoring the perfect 100pts and an average Wine Advocate score between 1998-2013 of over 96pts. Crucially the heart of the chateau’s success continues to lie in its truly remarkable terroir that spans one of St-Emilion’s most privileged slopes. So whilst Pavie’s original reputation was as the poster-boy of rich, ripe Bordeaux for the 21st Century, Perse has continually tweaked and finessed his style to allow the vineyard full and true expression. Indeed from 2014 onwards there has been greater delicacy of touch without losing any of the wine’s inherent exotic charms. Where once it was controversial, even divisive, today Pavie enjoys consistent plaudits both sides of the Atlantic and far beyond.

Tasting Notes and Scores

99 RP

There was no frost in the vineyard in 2017, due to its situation high upon the limestone plateau. Composed of 60% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, which was harvested from September 25 to October 3, the 2017 Pavie is very deep garnet-purple in color and rolls slowly and sensuously out of the glass with growing scents of Black Forest cake, black plum preserves, blueberry compote and fruitcake plus suggestions of melted chocolate, licorice, crushed rocks and Indian spices with a waft of violets. Full-bodied, the palate packs a powerful punch, laden with electric layers of energetic black and blue fruits. All this decadent fruit is supported by fantastic freshness and very, very ripe, velvety tannins, finishing with epic length. Location, location, location was everything in 2017. Pavie has one of the most enviable locations in all of Bordeaux and boy-oh-boy does it show in this spectacular wine. LPB March 2020

The wine of the vintage, the 2017 Chateau Pavie is an incredible achievement and is certainly in the same league as past great vintages such as 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2015, and 2016. This hillside terroir escaped from the frost unscathed, and the 2017 is 60% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon brought up in mostly new oak. Its deep purple hue is followed by a rock star bouquet of pure creme de cassis, espresso roast, crushed violets, graphite, and a distinct sense of minerality. Deep, full-bodied, and concentrated, it has a wonderful sense of elegance, flawless balance, and again, awesome purity. This sensational effort has some upfront charm yet, given the tannins, a solid 7-8 years of bottle age are warranted and it should cruise for 25-30 years in cool cellars. Feb 2020

The 2017 Pavie is deep garnet in color with a touch of purple. It bounds out with exuberant notes of black and red cherries, black raspberries, and fertile loam plus touches of cumin seed, tar, and licorice. The full-bodied palate is so plush and juicy, with wonderful freshness and a long fragrant finish. This is drinking beautifully but still has loads to give and should cellar for a good 25 years+. Profound, crushed blueberry and blackberry aromas here. Mint and chalk undertones. Full-bodied with a center palate of balanced and ripe fruit with polished and caressing tannins. Excellent finish that goes on for minutes. All in finesse and length. A wine to contemplate and enjoy.

Floral notes emerge from the deep garnet colored wine. Full-bodied, intense, deep, sweet and podgy, this wine is a tsunami of tannin and slate with layers of deep, ripe fruits that will demand aging. Made from a blend of 60% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine reached 14.6% with a pH of 3.61. The harvest took place September 25 to October 3. Tasted EP April 2018

Upgraded to Grand Cru Classe 'A' in 2012, Gerard Perse's Pavie is one of the most talked-about wines in all of Bordeaux. So tightly coiled and muted, backwards and dense, but releasing some saline, shell-like characters underneath the dark chocolate and rich plum fruit. Huge weight of stunningly pure, bright raspberry, black cherry and plum fruit, layered with clean limestone minerality - so much minerlity, especially coming through in the finish. There is such balance and interest here. Pavie is really operating on a new level which just makes so much sense. - April 2018

The 2017 Pavie is deep in colour, lucid in the glass. The bouquet demands a lot of coaxing before revealing scents of black cherries, blueberry, hints of cassis and crushed violet petals. It is powerful on the nose but I appreciate the contribution of the increased proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, imparting cedar and pencil box tones. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins. This is a well-built, an almost stocky Pavie with firm backbone, again, courtesy of the Cabernet, lightly spiced. A persistent finish fans out in superb fashion. It remains a "luxuriant" Pavie but one that is endowed more intellect than some recent vintages. www.vinous.com

The 2017 Pavie is very good, but it is also a bit somber in this vintage, almost as if the lack of sun during the summer speaks through the wine. Wild cherry, blueberry jam, leather and spice add to an impression of darkness. The 2017 finishes with real density and power to round things out. I can't wait to see how the 2017 develops over the next year. - vinous.com, May 2018

Dark and admirably ripe, with layers of fig and blackberry compote liberally infused with tobacco, licorice snap and fruitcake flavors. Shows some heft through the finish, but there’s enough energy to keep this moving along. A long, subtle echo of chalk is alluring. - James Molesworth, winespectator.com, April 2018

Black-hearted with purple rim. Rich and dark and packed with fruit, and here the oak char adds a savoury quality and does not overwhelm the fruit. Excellent freshness – everything is embryonic but in a powerful but harmonious whole. A particular style but well done in that style. Chewy, compact and all so concentrated. Needs time to unfurl. - Julia Harding, jancisrobinson.com, April 2018
