Tasting Notes and Scores
Spicy nose with nutmeg, cedar and sweet tobacco. Blueberries and some milk chocolate. Pure dark fruit on the palate with a wonderful texture and quite deep structure. Ripe polished tannins and a wonderfully focused long finish. Best ever from here. Drink from 2018.

What a change here with impressive polished tannins and lots of blueberry, milk chocolate and polished tannnins. It goes on for long time on the palate. Much more precise winemaking. 18 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 9 percent Cabernet Franc and the rest in Merlot.

(75% merlot, 18% cabernet franc and 7% cabernet sauvignon; 70% new oak; 14.5% alcohol) Good, bright ruby-red. Complex aromas of red berries, violet and minerals, plus a whiff of peppery milk chocolate. Very suave and silky on entry, then tight and energetic in the mid-palate, with sweet flavors similar to the aromas. Ripe and smooth on the long, peppery aftertaste. There's more cabernet franc this year in the blend, technical director Jean-Luc Martignon told me, because a well-situated parcel that survived the frost of 1956 has turned out to be cabernet franc—and not cabernet sauvignon, as they had always believed! This looks to be one of the best vintages for Petit Village in years. Stephane Derenoncourt also consults here.

A very strong effort from Petit Village, the 2010 is the finest effort in years. Dark plum with hints of mocha, caramel, sweet currants and cherries, this opulent, savory, and explosive full-bodied wine already is accessible and evolved. Anticipated maturity: now- 2025.

2010: The finest wine from this estate since their glorious 1982, the 2010 Petit Village possesses aromas of licorice, black cherries, cassis, truffles and oak. Powerful and deep with a corpulent texture, a silky mouthfeel and a wonderful lushness, it will be drinkable in 2-3 years and last for 15 or more.

Tasted at the Union de Grand Cru in London. The Petit Village has a rather strict bouquet – very linear – with scents of briary, sous-bois and a hint of dried orange peel. The palate is well balanced with a fleshy entry infused with Asian spice, white pepper and a touch of sea salt. This is a complex, assertive Petit Village that coats the mouth, although I suspect it will develop more finesse with time on the finish. Tasted November 2012.

Tasted at Pichon Baron. A blend of 18% Cabernet Franc, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon and the remainder Merlot, this has a relatively understated nose with dark cherries, a touch of truffle and blackberry leaf. The palate is full-bodied with grippy tannins, a voluminous Petit-Village, quite assertive, perhaps just a little aggressive on the tannic finish at the moment. Masculine and bold, I did not warm to this PV as much as I anticipated. Let’s see after bottling. Drink 2015- Tasted March 2011.

Good dark red. Warm, inviting aromas of raspberry, plum, smoked meat, mocha and tobacco, plus a suggestion of woodsmoke. Lush, seamless and rather full-blown, with just enough vinosity to give shape to the flavors of strawberry liqueur, tobacco and truffle. An herbal edge on the finish adds an element of complexity. This rather showy, silky wine can be enjoyed early but should evolve positively in bottle for a decade or more.

Crushed plum, raspberry and cassis flavors glide along silky, refined tannins, with a suave finish that has a polished edge. —J.M.

(14.5%) [70M/15CF/7CS] That Cabernet Franc ‘freshness’ clear to smell and taste; concentrated, elegantly balanced, fairly full bodied wine; you do feel the 14.5%, alongside the firm, long term, slightly chewy texture; long, sweet fruit cored, nicely sustained, and with fine spicy length. Here the 09 seems finer and more flattering. 8-10 years minimum. [M.Schuster, Bordeaux Mar/Apr 2011]

Tasted blind. Rich, ripe mature aromas of dried fruits and wet leaves. Smells decadent. Smooth and still surprisingly juicy on the palate, with fruit to fill out the tannins. Big but balanced. (JH)
