Petrus, Pomerol

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2011
Region: Bordeaux, Pomerol

Petrus is the undoubted, undisputed heavyweight hero of Bordeaux, occupying the very highest echelon of the global wine market alongside DRC and Henri Jayer. Combining Burgundian production levels with the ultimate in Pomerol style, Petrus is a rare beast, appealing to new and old alike; it is both first in line for every wealthy new collector’s cellar whilst also occupying a prized place in the collections of the great connoisseurs of the wine world. The estate consists of 11.5 hectares lying at the heart of the Pomerol appellation, producing approximately 30,000 bottles per year. Petrus wine is produced on the famed ‘plateau’ in the eastern part of Pomerol where the vineyard enjoys excellent drainage and thick clay soil. Under winemaker Olivier Berrouet the quality of Petrus has maintained the highest imaginable level and with production being much lower than the first growths of the left bank, and yields as low as possible, Petrus is rarer and thus invariably more expensive.

Tasting Notes and Scores

95-97 NM

The 2011 Petrus has a very refined, perhaps slightly introverted bouquet with extraordinary purity. It has quite amazing precision and lifted with black cherries, raspberry and a touch of vanilla. It is very intense, perhaps more like 2009 at this stage than 2010. The palate is medium-bodied with a powerful entry. There is a touch of spice on the entry and very intense fruit. The tannins are tensile, lending this Petrus edginess and minerality. This has “classic” Petrus written all over it. It is not quite up there with the 2009 or 2010, but it’s not far off. – eRobertParker.com, May 2012

This is tight and firm, with blueberry and blackberry character, and hints of sweet tobacco. Some wet earth, too. Black olives. Full body and very tight, with ultra-fine tannins and a fresh finish. Powerful and muscular. Try after 2023. – jamessuckling.com, Feb 2014

A dense ruby/purple-tinged color and restrained but intriguing aromas of kirsch, raspberry jam, wood spice, and mulberries are found in this full-bodied Petrus. An undeniable success in 2011, it is rich, layered and pure with light to moderate tannin, but seems slightly less muscular and tannic compared to its stablemate, Trotanoy. Forget it for a few years and drink it over the following 25 years. Made from 100% Merlot, it tips the scales at 13.5% alcohol. In short, it is typically open-knit and already showing very well. This is quite opulent. 95 points – Robert Parker (Wine Advocate #212, April 2014)

It’s immediately obvious that the 2011 vintage has been handled in exemplary fashion at Petrus. It’s arguable that better vintage conditions are needed in order to create the very best bottles, but every vintage has a character which must be managed and allowed to express itself through the prism of each property’s terroir; the 2011 is a lighter style with perfectly poised acidity, layers of plum, fig and raspberry fruit, a whiff of vanilla, cinnamon and smoke from the oak (only 50% new oak was used this year, and even these barrels were filled with boiling water for 2 weeks in order to draw the harshness from the wood). It’s unquestionably a Petrus with its supple texture and buttery softness. Wonderful.

This sports sweet spice, bitter cherry and light briar notes, with lively, pebbly tannins guiding the finish. Slightly high-pitched notes of blood orange and red currant fill in as well. Delivers range and length, yet lacks the depth of the top wines in this vintage. Best from 2015 through 2025

Ripe, spicy damson-fruit aroma. Extremely firm grip on the palate, the tannins are chalky and compact, letting very little escape on the palate right now. But it is fresh on the finish and seems pretty complete. Drink: 2020-2035 – Julia Harding (jancisrobinson.com, Jan 2015)
