Tasting Notes and Scores
Welcoming, tobacco and undergrowth aromatics, touches of smoked earth, grilled almonds, fine tannins, showcasing the finessed side of Cabernet as it ages. This has a gentle power, wild strawberry puree, brambled fruits with fresh acidities, lilting, subtle and a lovely moment to drink. Don't expect a Pauillac powerhouse here, but there is life in the glass, a mouthwatering finish and it has something to say. 55-60hl/h yield.

The 1988 Pichon Baron is a wine that I have tasted four or five times before although not since 2011. Deep in colour, it has a tightly wound bouquet with blackberry, wild hedgerow and cedar, touches of tobacco coming through, maybe just a hint of greenness although nothing to get concerned about. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly rustic tannin. Good body and freshness with strong cedar and graphite notes. Although it is missing the fruité of the 1989 and 1990 there is a reassuring sense of classicism here. It is as if you know exactly what you are getting with the minimum of fuss. Drink over the next decade or so. Tasted at the château.

The 1988 Pichon-Longueville promises to be one of the half-dozen superstars of this vintage. Surprisingly large-scaled for a 1988, with an oaky, cassis, and licorice-scented nose, it is deep in color, rich, softly tannic, medium to full-bodied, and should reach maturity early on, but keep for 15-20 years. Anticipated maturity: Now-2010. Last tasted 1/93

The 1988 Pichon-Baron promises to be one of the half-dozen superstars of the Medoc in that vintage. While it may not rival the 1989, its significantly lower price makes it a wine that should appeal to those who want an excellent bargain in a great Pauillac from a good vintage. Surprisingly large-scaled for a 1988, it is deep in color, rich, tannic, and medium to full-bodied. When mature, it may resemble the successful 1966 (similar texture, weight, and character). Anticipated maturity: 1995-2008. Last tasted, 5/93.
