2013 Chateau Pichon Baron 2eme Cru Classe, Pauillac

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2013
Region: Bordeaux, Pauillac
% Alcohol: 13.00

Pichon Baron is the most photographed Chateau in Bordeaux and produced good, occasionally brilliant, wines from the 60s to 80s. Since the purchase of Pichon Baron in 1988 by AXA Millesimes, the property has gone from strength to strength to become one of the most consistent in quality and fair in value. The quality achieved from this grand terrior is constantly biting at the heels of next door neighbour Latour. Under the stewardship of Christian Seely this estate has shown itself to be one of the most consistently high-performing Chateaux in Pauillac, if not the whole of the Medoc. The improvements began under the auspices of Jean-Michel Cazes (of Lynch Bages fame) culminating in the sensational 1989/90 combination; they continued and indeed arguably picked up further pace in 2000 when the charming, bow-tie-sporting Christian Seely took over. Since then the estate has moved to a new level, with the most significant change being the accurate identification of the most appropriate plots across the estate for each of their wines. Whilst this has inevitably reduced the potential volume, the quality of fruit which now goes into the Grand Vin is so exceptional that Pichon Baron can be considered a true paragon of Pauillac. As Neal Martin states “the wines of Pichon-Baron certainly rank with some of the best in Pauillac... This is undoubtedly a château that has really found its own identity since the late-80's and under the aegis of Christian Seely, is asserting itself as a Pauillac wine to be reckoned with.”

Tasting Notes and Scores

94 JS

This has a really beautiful depth and finish to it with chocolate, blackberry, black currant and light mint character. Full. Very long. Seamless tannins. Hints of acidity. Better in 2019 but already excellent. - jamessuckling.com, February 2016

Pichon-Baron is never shy and retiring, and this is no exception. The nose has developed a savoury tone alongside its blackcurrant and liquorice aromas. It's compact, dense and imposing, with no sign of evolution. Robust and even chunky, it does lack some finesse but it's a typically assertive Pauillac with considerable staying power and length. Dark red cherry, plum, spicecake and crushed flowers are some of the many notes that meld together in the 2013 Pichon Baron. Silky and resonant in the glass, the 2013 impresses for its texture and soft, enveloping personality. While there is plenty of early appeal, the 2013 has more than enough brightness and acidity to suggest it will age gracefully. The 2013 Pichon Baron brings together a classic sense of structure with a modern and very pure expression of fruit. The blend is 82% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Merlot. Tasted twice.

(82% cabernet sauvignon and 18% merlot; 70% new oak): Deep red-ruby. Perfumed nose offers enticing scents of dark cherry, tar, Oriental spices, licorice and violet. Very deep, pure, clean and rich on the palate, with flavors of black fruits and sexy spices lifted by aromatic notes of tobacco and ink. Finishes with youthfully chewy but noble tannins. This classic Pauillac displays an almost opulent mouthfeel that is very rare in this vintage. One of the stars of the Left Bank in 2013.

The 2013 Pichon-Longueville Baron is definitely one of the better Pauillacs of the vintage, although it does not quite hurdle over the obstacles placed by the growing season with the ease I thought it would. Blackberry, cedar and a touch of chimney soot here, good fruit intensity for the vintage with fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, quite compact in the mouth, linear and masculine with a slightly austere but fresh, short finish. Not bad at all, though Christian Seely has overseen wines in a different league from this in recent years. - robertparker.com, October 2016

82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot. Ripe cherry, dry and tender with a light body and pretty chalky tannin. Much firmer than the Comtesse. Needs plenty of time, I suspect – unusually for 2013s. (RH)

Tasted blind. Inky with black core. Ripe cassis – stands out for rich fruit in this line-up. Attractively savoury too. Firm, dark and very Pauillac with finesse to the tannins. Embryonic and promising. (JH)

Crimson with blackish notes. Much deeper colour than Pichon Lalande. Serious wine but without much charm. A dry finish and rather hollow on the mid palate. Decent persistence though. (JR)

82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot. Aged 18 months in oak barrels (70% new) . In the context of this vertical tasting (2000–2020) this is clearly the weak link but sound all the same. Lighter weight and frame but juicy and balanced. Leafy notes but limited complexity. Dry finish. Best drunk while the fruit holds. (JL)
