Chateau Pichon Baron 2eme Cru Classe, Pauillac

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2017
Region: Bordeaux, Pauillac

Pichon Baron is the most photographed Chateau in Bordeaux and produced good, occasionally brilliant, wines from the 60s to 80s. Since the purchase of Pichon Baron in 1988 by AXA Millesimes, the property has gone from strength to strength to become one of the most consistent in quality and fair in value. The quality achieved from this grand terrior is constantly biting at the heels of next door neighbour Latour. Under the stewardship of Christian Seely this estate has shown itself to be one of the most consistently high-performing Chateaux in Pauillac, if not the whole of the Medoc. The improvements began under the auspices of Jean-Michel Cazes (of Lynch Bages fame) culminating in the sensational 1989/90 combination; they continued and indeed arguably picked up further pace in 2000 when the charming, bow-tie-sporting Christian Seely took over. Since then the estate has moved to a new level, with the most significant change being the accurate identification of the most appropriate plots across the estate for each of their wines. Whilst this has inevitably reduced the potential volume, the quality of fruit which now goes into the Grand Vin is so exceptional that Pichon Baron can be considered a true paragon of Pauillac. As Neal Martin states “the wines of Pichon-Baron certainly rank with some of the best in Pauillac... This is undoubtedly a château that has really found its own identity since the late-80's and under the aegis of Christian Seely, is asserting itself as a Pauillac wine to be reckoned with.”

Tasting Notes and Scores

96 JD

A blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot aged 18 months in 80% new French oak, the 2017 Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron sports a vivid purple hue as well as gorgeous notes of creme de cassis and black raspberry fruits interwoven with classic Pauillac lead pencil, crushed rocks, chocolate, and violet notes. Full-bodied and concentrated, yet elegant and seamless, it has remarkable purity, flawless tannins, beautifully integrated acidity, and a great finish. It's going to hit the early stages of prime drinking in 7-8 years and cruise for 20-25 years or more.

The grand vin represents 50% of production this year. A blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Merlot, the 2017 Pichon-Longueville Baron is deep garnet-purple in color and simply sings of vibrant blackcurrants, black cherries and rose hip notes with nuances of potpourri, incense, licorice and pencil shavings plus touches of cigar box and fertile loam. Medium-bodied, super intense and possessing stunning poise, it has very firm, fine-grained tannins and a beautifully silken texture, with bags of freshness and a very long, perfumed finish.

The currants, blackberries and spices are very pretty here on the nose. The palate is medium-to full-bodied with round, compact tannins and a fresh, linear finish. Cool and racy. Strong and focused.

James Suckling

The bolder, more intense and most robust of the Pichons, this estate is expertly run by the inimitable Christian Seeley. Complex, attractive and musky on the nose. Nice pithy, richly mattered palate with good weight and precision, building to a zesty, clean finish with great energy. Delicious.

Pichon Baron is one of the sexiest Pauillacs I tasted in 2017. Silky, nuanced and finessed to the core, the 2017 hits all the right notes. In the glass, the 2017 possesses striking aromatic presence, vivid flavors, silky tannins and exceptional balance. In 2017, Pichon Baron is a wine of incomparable elegance and total finesse. I loved it.

The 2017 Pichon-Baron was picked from 18 September with the Merlot, finishing on 3 October with the Cabernet Sauvignon, matured in 80% new oak for 20 months. It has a crisp, precise and tightly wound bouquet, although the aromatics feel a little reticent. Likewise, the tannins are a little conspicuous at this precise moment. They will soften with time. There is commendable body and precision, slightly peppery towards the finish with a tang of cracked black pepper on the aftertaste. Very fine - what you might call a "solid" Pichon Baron. www.vinous.com

This is nice, with dark plum and blackberry compote flavors that have a fleshy edge, while light bay, tobacco and savory notes add range, combining with the vintage’s fresh acidity and bright mineral edge. - James Molesworth, winespectator.com, April 2018

Wine Spectator

17.5 JR

Very dark with black core and purple rim. Seductively dark fruit and graphite. Seductive without being flirtatious, rather serious in fact. Deep with black fruit, not sweet, dry and super-smooth with a dry elegance and restraint. Extremely fine and surprisingly juicy on the finish. Long and elegant. Firm, compact and delicious. - Julia Harding, jancisrobinson.com, April 2018
