Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2eme Cru Classe, Pauillac

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2004
Region: Bordeaux, Pauillac

Pichon Lalande is often judged on its relationship to its namesake and opposite neighbour, Pichon Baron, and understandably so; what this overlooks (and we use the term carefully) is that Pichon Lalande adjoins the venerable terroir of Chateau Latour, arguably the finest piece of vineyard real estate on the Left Bank. From their stunning new glass-and-steel winery one is afforded a vista that is virtually unmatched in Bordeaux – across several hectares of Cabernet and Merlot vines, straight onto the Gironde, via the hallowed house of Latour and its famous squat stone tower. This is no uneasy neighbour; at its best, Lalande stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the First Growths. If Pichon Baron boasts the power and masculinity of Latour, then Pichon Lalande sports its elegance, perfume, clarity of vineyard and sensual texture. Since Nicolas Glumineau took over the reins the estate has delivered a string of exceptional wines with the run from 2015 to 2019 as good as anything the estate has produced.

Tasting Notes and Scores

95 DR

In the same frame as the 2002 in that it is classic, with firm tannins, big shoulders, and Pauillac bite, but this is bigger and more enjoyable in every way, more of a crowd pleaser, and a beautifully velvety texure. Cassis, cocoa baen, liquorice root, bilberry, crushed stones, essence of its appellation. An abundant year also, with high yields (clocking in at over 60hl/h). Plenty of intensity through the mid palate. Not as seductive as some vintages of Comtesse, but easily one of the wines of this vintage and it's beginning to be ready to drink at this point. The 2004 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is showing beautifully, wafting from the glass with aromas of rich dark berry fruit, cigar wrapper and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with velvety tannins and a seamless, charming profile, it is really beginning to drink with some style. It's one of the wines of the vintage and continues to represent terrific value. 94pts WK Feb 2022
The 2004 Pichon Lalande is a strong effort for the vintage (much better than their underwhelming and much more expensive 2005). A blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it exhibits a deep ruby/purple color as well as scents of cocoa, espresso roast, black cherries, and cassis. Medium to full-bodied, opulent, and fleshy, this classic wine cuts a stylistic persona somewhere between the 1995 and 1996. It can be drunk now or cellared for two decades.

Tasted at Bordeaux Index annual 10-year on tasting from an ex-château bottle. The Pichon-Lalande 2004 has plenty of dark plum and blackberry fruit on the nose, a little higher-toned than its peers with just a hint of star anis and dried fig. The palate is supple on the entry with succulent ripe blackcurrant and raspberry fruit, touches of white pepper and graphite. This is fresh and vibrant, something almost like a classic Napa valley Cabernet about this wine. Lovely, so much so that I cannot recommend cellaring it for much longer! Tasted March 2014.

Open, with a soft textured, silky, medium bodied palate that says it's ready to go. But the secondary aromatics are not showing themselves yet. Tasted Feb 2016
