Tasting Notes and Scores

98 JS

A ravishing red that pours out aromas of crushed raspberries, blueberries and dried flowers. Black truffle skins and undertones of violets. Full-bodied yet so tight and refined with incredible finesse and polish. The beauty and chic runs on for minutes on the finish. A truly endless and breathtakingly harmonious wine. It just rolls off the palate. Drink in 2022. Feb 2017

Juicy and lively, couldn't be more different from Petrus, this is alive and fresh, lifted and really quite aerial and delicate in style. Lifted, aromatically lovely, fragranced raspberries and strawberries, gorgeous delicacy and purity on offer. Offers immediate enjoyment for sure. Not as layered or dramatic as Petrus, this is more linear but more striking and accessible at this point. I love its light handed touch. Yum.

Crushed red rose petals open up the complex aromatics on the nose, this is hugely distinctive, with sugar dusted almonds, sweet raspberry puree alongside more savoury lavender, tobacco, cured leather, redcurrant and pomegranate fruits, cocoa bean and a silky pillow of tannins. Totally gorgeous, a knockout wine that is ready to drink but going nowhere. One of the best of the tasting. 100% new oak.

This wine opens with citrus, floral, dark chocolate, plum and dark cherry notes in the nose, creating a complex set of aromatics. Plush, rich, clean and pure, what the wine lacks in opulence, it makes up for with its concentrated, fresh, long, pure, sweet, velvet-driven character. Tasted April 2015

Typical Le Pin. Almost Burgundian, berry-fruit fragrance. Delicate sweetness on the palate. Elegant texture with finely woven tannins. Persistent, fresh finish. Elegant, balanced and digestible. Drinking Window: 2020 - 2035

The 2014 Le Pin has a really quite lovely bouquet. Tasted alongside its "cousin" Vieux-Château-Certan, it is more exotic and outgoing, yet it maintains fine delineation and complexity with upfront blueberry and black cherry fruit, quite a noticeable menthol note emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet and embracing entry, caressing in texture thanks to the succulent tannin, though these are counterpoised by the silver bead of acidity. There is just a touch of salted licorice that pops up on the finish. To quote Alexandre Thienpont (since Jacques and Fiona had to be in Belgium), this is a "classic" Le Pin, though I feel it will be overshadowed by the 2015. - Neal Martin (eRobertParker.com March 2017)

Tasted blind. Mid garnet with bricky rim. Really sweetly seductive aroma. Ripe damson with just a touch of leafiness to keep the freshness. Some tea leaf. Elegant, smooth, only moderate intensity but long. Silky finish. (JH)
