2016 Chateau Puygueraud, Blanc, Francs-Cotes de Bordeaux

Colour: White
Vintage: 2016
Region: Bordeaux
% Alcohol: 13.00

Thienpont is one of the most famous names in Bordeaux and this Petit Château is their unsung hero. If you want straight Sauvignon Blanc flavours, try the New Zealand or Sancerre examples; however, if you love the waxy, damp wool and honey notes of traditional white Bordeaux (as we do) then you will love this. An utter bargain. Owned by the infamous Nicolas Thienpont, Château Puygueraud is located in the small Côtes de Bordeaux Francs appellation on the rocky plateau that overlooks the beautiful Dordogne valley, which continues to Saint-Emilion. The story started in 1946 when Nicolas's father George and his wife Monica settled in Puygueraud and bought the property. The vineyards had been destroyed in the second world war and it wasn't until the late 1970's that Nicolas and his father decided to restore the estate and transform the agricultural land. Vines were planted in the soils again and in 1983, Château Puygueraud had its very first vintage. The estate spans over 86 acres and sits on one of the highest elevations on the right bank of Bordeaux at 384 feet above sea level. Today Niclas and his son Cyrille Thienpont are running the estate together and it is heralded as a jewel of Bordeaux''.

Tasting Notes and Scores

The 2016 Puygueraud Blanc is bright, crisp and intensely saline, with that classic touch of reduction that adds character and tension to the citrus, orchard fruit, sage and floral notes. This is very nicely done. The blend is 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Sauvignon Gris. In 2016, the Blanc is absolutely delicious. Tasted three times.
