(a 50/50 blend of merlot and cabernet franc): Inky-purple. Spicy, chocolatey aromas of cassis and plum. Enters chocolatey and sweet, then turns more austere and unyielding, though with bright flavors of blackberry and dark cherry throughout. The mounting tannins leave the palate a bit astringent, but the finish is long and juicy. This property, previously known as Chateau Tertre-Daugay, was bought by Haut-Brion's owners in late June of 2011.

Its bigger sibling, the 2011 Quintus is a richer, broader, deeper wine displaying a similar character. Raspberry, cherry, lead pencil and mineral notes dominate this deep ruby/purple-colored 2011. Medium-bodied with sweet tannin and up-front appeal, it should drink well for a decade. There are high expectations for this new project of the Domaines Clarence Dillon (formerly known as Tertre Daugay). It will be interesting to follow the evolution of these wines given the brilliance of the winemaking team at La Mission-Haut-Brion and Haut-Brion.

Subdued, dark-fruited aroma. Firm, chewy but everything in place. Juicy fruit in a chewy but supple tannic framework. Lithe and waiting to be juicy. (JH)

Tasted blind. Looks by far the most mature. Garnet with a pale rim. Some obvious sweetness on the nose. Light impact on the nose but with some attractive ingredients gradually unfurling themselves. Very dry finish. Very much a food wine. Arguably drying out a bit. (JR)
