Tasting Notes and Scores
Lots of purple fruit with asphalt and black-olive character. It’s full-bodied with chewy tannins and a long, linear finish.

The 2020 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc was cropped at 29hl/ha and aged in 60% new oak barrels. It takes its time to unfurl on the nose, toying with the olfactory senses before revealing attractive honeysuckle, yellow flowers, jasmine, melon and very subtle chamomile scents, gaining intensity with aeration. The palate is very well balanced with an intense, concentrated opening, a little more viscous in texture than the Le Petit Haut Lafitte, deeper and a touch spicier. Veins of lemongrass and stem ginger appear toward the finish. This should drink well for 15–20 years. One of the best dry whites of the vintage.

Incense, spice, oak, licorice, spearmint, smoke and red fruits peek through the perfume with ease. From there, the wine is plush and polished round and supple with layers of sweet, ripe fruits, spice and earthy nuances. Give this 7-8 years of cellaring and pop a cork on the best value in the Margaux appellation today. 92-94

The 2020 Siran is bold, racy and so expressive. Inky dark fruit, lavender, blueberry jam, spice, new leather, sweet oak and licorice. This sumptuous, racy Margaux possesses terrific depth and pliancy, all in a succulent style that likely won't require more than a few years in bottle. There is plenty to look forward to. Tasted two times.

Loads of blueberries, black raspberries, flowery incense, and violets define the nose of the 2020 Château Siran. It’s nicely concentrated and medium-bodied, with velvety tannins and the straight, focused style of the vintage. Tasted twice.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2020 Siran features notes of blackcurrant jelly, ripe redcurrants and raspberry leaves, plus suggestions of wild sage, tar and underbrush, with a waft of wild mushrooms. The medium-bodied palate is elegantly styled and refreshing, delivering approachable, soft tannins and plenty of red berry layers, finishing earthy.

Full bottle 1,324 g. Cask sample taken 6 April. 47% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot, 1% Cabernet Franc. 35% new oak.
Inky dark core with purple-crimson rim. Ripe dark fruit, blackberry as much as cassis, plus the fragrant lift of the Petit Verdot. A hint of new oak but not overdone. More savoury on the palate than I expected, with fresh cassis flavours to the fore. Lively, harmonious. (JH)
