Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte, Rouge Cru Classe, Pessac-Leognan

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2009
Region: Bordeaux, Pessac-Leognan

Smith Haut Lafitte has become one of the ‘must-have’ wines of Bordeaux, such has been its run of success certainly in the past 5-7 years but arguably as far back as 2000. The quality at SHL has been immense for a decade and they have undoubtedly made luxury their watchword: indeed they are one of the few Bordeaux estates to have a luxury hotel, spa and restaurant on their property! The wine is equally plush and generous, although it does not sacrifice structure and minerality in search of sheer hedonism. Their terroir delivers layers of mineral complexity whilst delving into more Burgundian, Asian spiced territory at times. It has also become a consistently textural delight, as alluded to by Jane Anson in Decanter “It's a highly impressive wine with an amazing texture - something that is starting to mark Smith Haut Lafitte out every year.”

Tasting Notes and Scores

98 DR

The 2009 logically displays the hallmarks of a wine from a sunnier vintage than the 2008 and shows a complex yet elegant bouquet with spices, graphite, blackberries, liquorice and slightly smoky aromas. It's full-bodied, with a spectacular balance, an elegant tannic frame and a racy freshness on the finish. As with many 2009 wines, it has a persistent and long finish that allows it to drink well today and during the next decade. Drinking Window: 2022 - 2030

Now, with just a few minutes of air you find truffle, smoke, fennel, black cherry, smoke and cocoa, dark chocolate notes. Full bodied, concentrated, the tannins are soft, the texture is round, the fruits are sweet, but there is oak needing to be better integrated into the wine. Give it another 5-8 years in the cellar, and if the oak fully integrates, this is going to be a great wine!

Good bright red-ruby. Enticing aromas of blueberry, flowers, graphite and charred, nutty oak, plus a sexy suggestion of floral white fruit. Like liquid silk on entry, then concentrated and lush in the middle, with red plum, tobacco and mineral flavors given definition by lovely harmonious acidity. Utterly seamless wine with suave tannins. Voluminous and intense but not a powerhouse. Finishing flavors mount slowly and stain the palate without leaving any impression of weight. Conveys a beautiful impression of site and vintage. The most complete young Smith Haut Laffite I've yet tasted at this early stage; perhaps my score will ultimately prove to be conservative.

The 2009 Smith Haut-Lafitte has a very perfumed, quite floral bouquet with violets permeating the black and red fruit, hints of game and leather developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. Touches of brown spice filter through the red fruit and towards a fleshy and lightly peppered finish. This is a classy Pessac-Léognan from the Cathiard's...though, the 2016 is better! - vinous.com, March 2019

[64CS/30M/5CF/PV] Dense ripe blackberry / cassis fruit and clear gravel aromas; nicely balanced, classic restrained Graves proportions: medium full, relatively supple, very finely tannic; long and elegant and even across the palate, ripe fruit, freshness, light oak, light gravel, very scented and fragrant Pessac-Léognan with a gentle fruit persistence. A lovely fresh, juicy quality, no excess structure, complete and fine - a classy middleweight. 2016-26

The finest wine ever made by proprietors Daniel and Florence Cathiard, the 2009 Smith-Haut-Lafitte exhibits an opaque blue/purple color in addition to a glorious nose of acacia flowers, licorice, charcoal, blueberries, black raspberries, lead pencil shavings and incense. This massive, extraordinarily rich, unctuously textured wine may be the most concentrated effort produced to date, although the 2000, 2005 and 2010 are nearly as prodigious. A gorgeous expression of Pessac-Leognan with sweet tannin, emerging charm and delicacy, and considerable power, depth, richness and authority, it should age effortlessly for 30-40+ years. Bravo!

One can't say enough about what proprietors Daniel and Florence Cathiard have accomplished at this estate since 1990. Regrettably, I am old enough to remember how horrible the wines were before the Cathiards purchased the property. They have fashioned one of the most consistently outstanding wines, both white and red, over the last two decades, and their 2009 probably eclipses any previous performance. An opaque purple color is followed by an explosive nose of graphite, black currants, licorice, incense, and a hint of black tea. The wine hits the palate with extraordinary density, unctuosity, and richness, yet it never comes across as heavy or overbearing. Deep and full-bodied with sensational concentration as well as remarkable purity and precision, this brilliant wine possesses the high, but sweet tannins that are a hallmark of the vintage, and exceptional delicacy allied to massive power and richness ... a rare combination indeed. This prodigious effort should drink well for 30-40 years. Bravo! (Tasted five times.)

I think the greatest Smith Haut Lafitte to date (possibly matched by the 2018), the 2009 Château Smith Haut Lafitte tastes like it did on release, offering a smorgasbord of Graves magic in its smoked blackcurrants, chocolate, cold fireplace, truffle, unsmoked tobacco, and Asian spices. While this is a big, rich, incredibly concentrated Graves, it nevertheless maintains a beautiful level of nuance and elegance, with silky tannins, a seamless, multi-dimensional texture, and a heavenly finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. As with all truly great wines, it delivers an incredible amount of pleasure, both hedonistic and intellectual, all while staying weightless, graceful, and elegant. Hats off to the Cathiard family and winemaker Fabien Teitgen for this legendary Graves!
