Tasting Notes and Scores
Another gorgeous wine from this estate, the 2020 Château Soutard offers the fresh, pure, lively style of the vintage beautifully as well as offering ample red, blue, and black fruits, notes of graphite, crushed stone, and violets, seamless tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. This is elegance paired with power, and it's going to benefit from just 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for 20+. Bravo!

Deep purple-black colored, the 2020 Soutard opens with the most gorgeous perfume of rose petals, lavender, kirsch and raspberry leaves, followed by a core of preserved plums and ripe blackberries, plus emerging suggestions of clove oil and mandarin peel. The medium to full-bodied palate is softly textured and irresistibly seductive, featuring layer upon layer of perfumed red and black fruits and fantastic tension, finishing long, lifted and satisfyingly spicy.

The 2020 Soutard is a wine of real depth and character. Red/purplish fruit, lavender, sage, mint, rose petal and mocha are all laced together. This silky, stylish Saint-Émilion is wonderfully appealing right out of the gate. Bright floral accents add energy and vibrancy throughout.

The complex set of aromatics opens with 5 spice, smoke, licorice, tobacco leaf, chocolate and blackberry liqueur notes. Full-bodied, lush, opulent and silky, the wine is deep, concentrated and rich, yet light on its feet, elegant, balanced and fresh. The finish lingers with an array of ripe, red, black and blue fruits, licorice and toasty oak. There is a lot going on here, so give it some time to come together, maybe 6 years or more. 93-95

The 2020 Soutard has quite an opulent bouquet of blueberry, blackberry, pencil box and light tarry scents, perhaps needing to show a little more delineation and focus. That may come with barrel/bottle age. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and a fine bead of acidity that cuts through the slightly tarry black fruit. It does not fan out like some other Saint-Émilions this vintage, but maybe it is biding its time. This Soutard might only show its potential after bottling.

Lovely perfumed nose with almost Ch Canon-like elegance. Gentle berry fruit on the palate, the tannins are fine grained, the freshness reinforced. Chalky terroir notes as well. Absolutely no aggression. Persistent finish. Confirms the châteaux’s progression. (JL)
