Tasting Notes and Scores

99 JD

Candied orange, grilled apricot, spice, and a decadent richness all define the 2010 Château Suduiraut, a full-bodied Sauternes with incredible purity and balance and blockbuster length. It brings the richness and depth of the vintage as well as a freshness, purity, and precision that’s only present in the greatest dessert wines. It’s in its early prime drinking window yet has decades of life ahead of it. Drink 2025-2075.

One of the highest points of this vertical tasting, the 2010 Suduiraut reveals a dense, powerful bouquet of ripe apricots, exotic fruit, mango, pineapple, saffron and spices. More solar than the 2009 and with a full-bodied structure, it’s rich and concentrated, layered and seamless with a fleshy core of fruit and stunning controlled power, finishing long and mineral with bright acids. This stunning blend of 90% Sémillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc, harvested between September 22 and November 9 in five tries, was matured for 20 months in oak barrels (50% new, 50% one year) and contains 145 grams per liter of residual sugar.

The 2010 Suduiraut has an attractive bouquet with notes of Mirabelle, jasmine and saffron infusing the upfront honeyed fruit. This is no shy retiring wallflower. The palate is well balanced with a viscous opening, lightly spiced with a pleasant bitter note that lends tension on the finish. Good length, this is a very fine 2010 Sauternes.

The 2010 Suduiraut, picked from 22 September until 9 November in five tries through the vineyard, has a drop-dead gorgeous bouquet that is delineated and detailed. There are copious scents of dried honey, apricot, white peach and just a hint of melted candle wax. The palate is very well balanced with great depth. It boasts layers of rich botrytised fruit, you can feel the weight here but not the heaviness thanks to that killer line of acidity. This 2010 has long been one of the finest Sauternes of the vintage and continues to amaze. Fabulous, even if not quite up there with the imperious 2009. 13.8% alcohol, 145gm/L residual sugar. Tasted at the Suduiraut vertical at the château. 96 points

Expressive fruity nose in this top Sauternes with ripe orange, apricot and pineapple. Candied orange peel, white peach and orange blossom. This Sauternes is elegant and with wonderfully balanced sweetness on the palate. Good structure and length. Vibrant acidity and lots of spice in the excellent finish. Excellent. Drink or hold.

Wonderful nose, very citrus fruit zest; beautifully balanced, fresh, moderately concentrated middleweight; sweet without excess, concentrated, vital, long across the palate, unctuous in texture but with a lovely, lively defining acidity, plenty of botrytis complexity, and excellent Noble Rot spiced length; vivid Sauternes; of great finesse and class and with terrific persistence, a beautiful Suduiraut! Slightly less opulent style than many recent vintages, very much to my taste – digeste - and with great length too. A great Suduiraut, and if this is indeed representative of the final blend then even better than the 2009. Though, as Jean Rene put it “this is a complicated comparison” i.e. not an either or. 2016-40+ [M.Schuster, Bordeaux Mar/Apr 2011]

A powerfully rendered Sauternes, with apricot, ginger cream, marzipan, creamed peach and melon fruit, featuring a long, heather honey-filled finish. Shows polished edges already, but will need some time to unwind. Best from 2018 through 2030. JM

Pale to medium lemon-gold colored, the 2010 Suduiraut features quite a savory nose with notes of lightly browned toast, salted almonds, nutmeg and cinnamon over a core of crème caramel, pear tart and peach cobbler. The palate is decadently sweet, concentrated and unctuous with soft acidity and a spicy finish.

90% Sémillon, 10% Sauvignon Blanc. Harvested 22 September to 9 November (5 tris). Yield 20 hl/ha. Aged 20 months in oak barrels (50% new, 50% one year). RS 145 g/l, TA 3.6. Rich and intense but less giving than 2009 at the moment. Unctuous and fat on the palate with plenty of reserve. Misses a little freshness but plenty of matière for ageing. Worth waiting. (JL)

Tasted blind. Ripe and intensely botrytised aroma of almond paste and cedar. Broad and sweet and not quite fresh enough to cleanse the palate on the finish. (JH)
